Sports That Don’t Have Or Need A Thread

African football isn’t that flash to watch but they get ridiculous amounts of coverage on Supersport throughout Africa. When I was in Durban a few months ago there was a tournament final at the Mabhida Stadium involving Botswana (can’t remember who the opponent was but it wasn’t the host nation and the crowd reflected this), yet it was covered and analysed within an inch of its life before I changed to channel to watch some Super Rugby.

In the FIBA World Cup France has caused a big upset to beat title-holders Team USA 89-79 to advance to the World Cup semis. Australia are also into the semi finals where they will play Spain after the Boomers beat Czech Republic.

In the FIBA World Cup semi final, Spain has beaten Australia 95-88 in double overtime. The Boomers led for the most of the match before Spain fought back in the 4th quarter. Scores were locked at 71-all at the regulation time and 80-all at the end of first OT period. The Boomers had their chances during overtime, but missed shots and turnovers proved costly. Spain, ranked No.2 in the world, also beat Australia at the Rio Olympics in 2016. Regardless of tonight’s result, this is already the Boomers’ best performance at the tournament.
The GoBoomers hashtag was trending at No.2 on Twitter behind the AFL semi final between Geelong and West Coast especially when the game went into overtime.
UPDATE 14/9:
Spain will face Argentina (which beat France 80-66 in the second semi) in Sunday’s final. Before that, Australia will play France in the bronze play-off.

Yay. Deserved the win for NSW Swifts.

Australia have finished fourth at this year’s Basketball World Cup after losing to France 59-67 in the bronze medal final. Like Friday’s semi-final against Spain, the Boomers built up a good lead only to be overrun by its opponent towards the end. Already there have been demands on social media for Boomers coach Andrej Lemanis to be sacked.
It’s the fourth time the Boomers finished fourth in a major international tournament.
Spain easily accounted for Argentina in the final to win the cup.

Bing Dwen Dwen is a panda and are used for the Olympics in February 2022. Shuey Rhon Rhon is a lantern that will be used in the Paralympics in March 2022. I liked the mascots because the panda is native to China.

It wouldn’t surprise me if the Commonwealth Games dies out, too expensive and I don’t think anyone really cares

I personally couldn’t care less about the Commonwealth Games these days, although would’ve thought there are still plenty of sport-mad Australians who do because we always dominate them.

Look, I care about the Comm games. They are fantastic and are really a strong tradition in Australia celebrating our sporting success as a nation. It would be sad to see the games wind up. This though will give the opportunity to another country like PNG or Malaysia to host the games.

I still enjoy the Commonwealth Games. Australia has had 5 cities that have hosted the Games (1938, 1962, 1982, 2006 and 2018). Canada has had 4 times (1930, 1954, 1978, 1994), England has had 3 times (1934, 2002 and will be in 2022.) Malaysia has hosted the Games in 1998 (Kuala Lumpur). I would like to see another country host the games.

Also. Birmingham 2022 has unveiled its new logo for the games.

Interesting!

A toe in the water with a view to getting bigger events perhaps?

Expense will probably see the games restricted to the British Isles, Australia/(possibly) NZ and Canada in the near future. The upcoming Commonwealth Games in 2022 were originally going to be in Durban but it got too expensive and they lost the rights a few years ago.

Australia, British Isles, Canada, New Zealand And India are more successful in the Games.
Adelaide pulled out of the 2026 Games bid Due to expenses. PNG or Malaysia will be in the bid. Given that PNG is a small country, it is likely that Malaysia will win the hosting rights.

Conditions in PNG would be too hot for many… both competitors and visitors.

Though Malaysia won’t be much cooler.

No surprise this hasn’t got any attention given nobody in Doha is actually watching the World Athletics Championships but Australia has a new world champion javelin thrower
