Sports That Don’t Have Or Need A Thread

ABC News used footage from FinaTV for its report on last night’s action. Sounds like Australian commentator Mike McCann is calling the finals for the world feed.

As revealed in The Australian, The Sydney Morning Herald’s sports reporter Andrew Wu used his Twitter to attack swimmer Mack Horton’s stance against Chinese swimmer Sun Yang at the FINA swimming championships in South Korea on Sunday night. Horton came second to Sun in the 400m lifestyle, and later refused to stand on the victory dais for the medal presentation. Andrew’s original tweet:

I thought reporters were not supposed to take sides in a debate?

Another swimmer refusing to take the podium with Sun Yang.

Australia had good results at the FINA World Championships despite the controversies over Mack Horton refusing to share the podium with Sun Yang, then Shayna Jack’s positive drug test. The 2021 champs will be held in Fukuoka, Japan, which hosted the 2001 event. Hopefully Australian networks will have a renewed interest in the event since Fukuoka is time zone friendly to Australia, like next year’s Tokyo Olympics.

Gwangju (this year’s host) and Fukuoka share the same time difference to Australia though.

The difference was Australian networks had low expectations on how the swimmers would perform in Gwangju. There was also the issue of high broadcast rights fees set by FINA.

I heard from the West Australian today that Shayna Jack could be at risk of being banned from competing in the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

If proven she can get up to 4 years, and possibly (although unlikely) even banned from competing at any future Olympics (the ban doesn’t cover World Championships though).

An Australian Triathlete was banned after testing positive to a substance, EPO.

Swimming Australia wants their swimmers to concentrate on swimming and not point the finger at other competitors.

Fans not happy with the seating tonight - reports of refunds - players dropping out.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission told 10 daily it is aware of refunds being made to spectators after receiving a number of complaints.

Safe to say we won’t see that configuration used again. I’d they must have chased a dollar by selling so many tickets, perhaps put the court on the wing or at one end of the ground and add some temporary stands on one side. Could still nudge past 30,000. They did something similar for a Kostya Tszyu fight when it first opened. Davis Cup at QEII in Brisbane was similar.
