Sports That Don’t Have Or Need A Thread

Shane van Gisbergen and Garth Tander have won this year’s Bathurst 1000 in the last ever race for Holden at Mount Panorama. It is van Gisbergen’s second crown after the duo’s 2020 victory, and Tander’s fifth.

van Gisbergen held out defending champion Chaz Mostert (with Fabian Coulthard) by just one second at the finish. Pole sitter Cameron Waters (with James Moffat) finished third.

Bathurst race. There are still a few races left this season.

I’m sure the FIA will be hoping this overshadows the farce that was bringing a tractor out onto a live track in the rain prior to the red flag. Clearly nothing learnt from Bianchi’s death on the same circuit in 2014.

The cynic in me reckons the FIA deliberately chose to interpret the rule regarding shortened races in the way they did (by declaring full points awarded) exactly in order to overshadow the tractor incident which was absolutely appalling.
Michael Masi had his faults as Race Director but I’d argue his track record (Abu Dhabi last year aside) was far better than Wittich and Freitas.

On another note, another year, another Japanese GP weekend affected by typhoonal/monsoonal weather. Surely at this point they’ve got to look hard at moving it to somewhere like April (out of monsoon season).

As an Aussie it would have the added bonus of avoiding the Bathurst clash that happens most years (which is annoying given so few races are in a good timeslot these days).

Going to be 2 weeks earlier next year (September 24), in an Asian treble with Singapore a week before and Qatar 2 weeks later. I actually think they’d rather move Australia to move to October swapping with Qatar than holding it in March/April as it is now but we know that’s unlikely to ever happen.

I did see that and must admit I was quite delighted seeing it not on the Bathurst weekend for a change. Will be interesting though weather-wise as September is, if anything, worse than October in Japan.

I’m pretty sure the FIA want to eventually group all the Asia-Pacific races (Australia, Japan, Singapore, China) in one leg to reduce travel costs but it will be interesting to see what time of year that would be. April makes the most sense from a weather and sunset time perspective but could also see them potentially making it October-November leading into maybe one other Middle East race (Qatar?) and then Abu Dhabi.

Allegedly F1 have wanted to move the race for a while but the Japanese GP organisers continue to prefer the current timing

The tiered points rule (as written) appears to only cover instances where the race can’t be restarted

Looks like the Victorian Government will progressively announce which regions would host which sports in the 2026 Commonwealth Games, before it goes into caretaker mode ahead of the November 26 state election.

This morning, the government revealed that five sports would be staged in Gippsland, with shooting and para shooting joining the existing competition schedule of women’s T20 cricket, badminton, rugby sevens and road cycling (which will finish with a criterium within central Traralgon).

Australia beat England by one goal in the first of the three-game netball test series in Newcastle last night, with Indigenous debutant Donnell Wallam making the scoring shot in the last few seconds.

This came after her criticism of comments made by the late mining magnate Lang Hancock in the 1980s regarding Indigenous people, which eventually led to Hancock’s daughter Gina Rinehart pulling a 4-year, $15 million sponsorship deal of Netball Australia on the weekend.

Social media reactions to the match and Wallam’s winning shot were mixed. Some even criticised Fox Sports’ Matt Russell’s in-game commentary which said that Wallam’s comments last week cost her team several million dollars.

Zero to hero after stuffing up a chance to win the game moments earlier.

Well he’s right. Not just her team, but WA Netball and junior and grassroots teams across the country. She could very well have doomed her sport.

Matt Russell has apologised for his in-game commentary regarding Donnell Wellam.

The Victorian Government announced today that Geelong’s GMHBA Stadium would host the closing ceremony of 2026 Commonwealth Games. Geelong would also be the headquarters of 2026 Games organising committee.

Torquay on the Surf Coast would host the ocean rowing events.
