Songs lost to radio

And so is this :joy:

If I listen long enough will I hear the whole list?

Need to intersperse it with the Mandy Moore cover of it

Is that what NIN’s Closer about? Never heard it.

Just after 9:50pm on Smallzy’s Surgery tonight: ā€œWingsā€ by Little Mix. Quite surprising given that these days, if radio stations play their music it would mostly be either ā€œBlack Magicā€ or ā€œShout Out to My Exā€ (another LM song Nova has played quite frequently, recently).

Similarly, the only song by The Script they tend to play these days is ā€œBreakevenā€, though Hope 103.2 alternates between ā€œHall of Fameā€ and ā€œSuperheroesā€.

Just after 11:30am on C91.3 FM this morning: ā€œI Don’t Do Surprisesā€ by Axle Whitehead. Released just after he was sacked by Network Ten for improper conduct at the 2006 ARIA Awards and shortly before he joined Seven where he starred on Home and Away and hosted The World’s Strictest Parents.

Seems like he just did another one 17 years on!

Forgot to note, the song was released in March 2008, more than twelve months after he left Ten in the circumstances mentioned above.

Ironically, the song was used on promos for Ten shows ā€œHouseā€ and ā€œWomen’s Murder Clubā€ in 2008.

He was also in a few episodes of neighbours as a bad guy Tyler was in the storyline 5-6 years ago

I initially thought that song was by Coldplay when it was released. A dead ringer for Chris Martin (not the cricketer or DXer).

The song was described as a cross between Coldplay and Robbie Williams.

Going to get a little obscure, only coz I just found the clip on YouTube.

Growing up in Launceston, 7LA (now LAFM) around 1990/91 used to play a song called Only You by Bang The Drum, think they were either from Tas or had a connection, had a bit of a 1927 feel to it.

They did play another local artist called Stephanie Howell, but couldn’t tell you what song.

Can’t imagine a regional picking up and playing local like that now - although not based there anymore.

Considering ARN’s regional music logs for Tas are programmed states away, sadly not.

Shameful that ARN/Camerons’ before, SCA and ACE have all gone down this bad road.

They also had a great song called ā€œPassionā€.

On the regional version of Triple M’s Greatest Aussie Songs on their 12 Countdowns of Christmas, I (infamously) heard ā€œNot Pretty Enoughā€ by Kasey Chambers. Despite being inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2018, Chambers’ discography is kind of barely played on mainstream radio these days.

she’s always been more of a country music singer, that was really her only mainstream hit…

I still like that song and think it deserves to be played more often.

This song re-entered my conscience the other day (somehow).

It was only ever a minor hit here - but the lead singer (Lisa Schuow) is better known for also fronting Girl Overboard, who had several great songs, also minor hits in the late 80s/early 90s with ā€˜I Can’t Believe’, ā€˜The Love We Make’ and ā€˜Permanent Friend’.

All of which have been sadly lost to radio. Lisa is also sadly no longer with us, having lost a battle with cancer in 2020 at the age of 62. She had one of the more distinctive vocals in Australian music.

Tragic, gone too soon.

Wow, those Girl Overboard songs were great weren’t they! I’d completely forgotten them.

She had an amazing voice.

Must admit I can only very vaguely remember Wrap Your Arms Around Me, but the other 3 definitely.

ā€˜The Love We Make’ was a regular on Geelong’s K-Rock when it first transmitted on FM in the summer of 1990.
