Songs lost to radio

Must admit I don’t listen to commercial radio all that much these days. Not saying that they are my favourite songs, just were played comparatively more back in the 90s than now.

Yeah, for sure. I just seem to hear that annoying UB40 song wherever I go. Plus Lean On Me (as well as Go West - We Close Our Eyes) never seems to end on 3GG.

What if this song played on Mix FM and Fox FM back in 2002? It’s a meme nowadays and I wished it did chart on the ARIA Charts.

The odds of circa 2002 Mix & Today networks playing that are basically zero. You’d be more looking at SBS Alchemy (wow that’s a flashback), if anything, but even then, SBS didn’t have a world music show at the time off memory.

Nothing but “western”/“Mainstream” music would have been played back then, because nothing else would last long.
“Non western” music didn’t really hit the major networks as much until as late as 2012, although admittedly I’m ignoring Latin, which occasionally broke through, based on the charts at the time.
Even now I’d still say they’re very “western”, although SBS’s music channels on Dab as well as streaming services are slowly changing that tide.

The closest comparison to '02 Mix I would say is potentially WS/Gold, closest to Today network is probably 2dayFM (in particular) and Oldskool.
Back then they would have been focusing on 90’s-now usually, even if Today was trying to fend off Nova.

Basically if it didn’t rate, 95% chance it wasn’t played.

What about this K-Pop song that came out in November 1997? What if TT-FM and Fox FM played this song? It never charted on the ARIA Charts.

At my gym they just played James Freud’s “Modern Girl”. It was a hit in 1980.

The next 30 minutes of my workout was spent replaying the song on YouTube Music.

The Ketchup Song (Aserejé) on 91.9 Sea FM . Have not heard for long time.

Hard to believe it was as popular as it was back in the early 00’s.

Those sort of novelty songs were quite big around then plus the Latin influence was huge then in so many songs (stretching back to the Macarena but taking in artists like Enrique Iglesias, Shakira, Santana etc)

As has already been mentioned 92.9 Perth playing some unique tracks before its relaunch as Triple M.

Elton John - Someone Saved My Life Tonight on now

“Boom Boom (Let’s Go Back To My Room)” by Paul Lekakis receives a surprising lack of airplay - considering it was a #1 hit and the 9th highest selling single of 1987.

Maybe it’s just a bit too cheesy & '80s sounding

I hear it a bit on WSFM, and particularly on WSFM 80s DAB.

Dance music had a boom (pardon the pun) period in the mid to late 1980s, especially in Melbourne where the King Street nightclubs played 12" mixes of songs like “Boom Boom” long before it reached the pop charts. Nightclubbing was fashionable in Melbourne back then. Other songs to reach the top 20 were “Male Stripper” by Man2Man, “Love and Devotion” by Michael Bow, “Showing Out” and “Respectable” by Mel and Kim, and “Exotic and Erotic” by Sandy Marton. People used to buy these records on import at places such as Central Station Records before they got local release. Also it was the last season of Countdown and the Countdown Dancers used to dance to these hits on the show, it helped sales of these records too.

Funny you mention this, it was just on Mix 94.5

An out there one, think it was ‘89 or ‘90, there was Lily Was Here which was an instrumental song that made top 10 in Aus (one of the few I’d suggest)

Can’t say I’ve heard it on radio in a long while.
