Yep, More Digital in around 2015-16 before it became OldSkool Radio. That station had an 80s/90s music format.
not if they want to increase people listening during the day
Come up with a better competion maybe after they play a song from Ed Sheeran(different artist every hour) and the x caller to call the station on 13 59 50 wins $3000. Have this run for a week or so and try something else or not have a competition.
or just run the competition they are running now
Which are fine for a week then they get boring. They should do something different. For example donât have a Smooth stars competition that goes on and on for months.
I am not against having competitions just be a bit more innovative. The current competition is a variant on Smooth stairs competition that they have had for years. For example they could play 3 songs each having a common theme. People call in and guess what the theme is and win. If noone guesses the prize money jackpots. There are heaps of things they can do.
Or they can have the competitions they currently have - like the current âwhat does Kim sayâ, which will be probably be followed by âwho are these 4 smooth starsâ when they say something like âi love smooth fmâ.
If the game goes for weeks, then its a good thing too. As time goes on, the announcers will give you clues. It makes you actually think of what the word is or who the stars are. Thinking is good for your brain rather than being the 3rd caller in to win a prize like other fm radio stationsâŚ
But after months of the same competition running it starts to get tiresome especially when the competition is run every hour. They should try something different for a bit or not have a competition at all for a few weeks.
I am against cheap Nova and their poorly copied ideas being shoehorned into each market as the same comp.
Different market, different prize pool.
Yes and have different presenters in each city. It might improve Smooth FMâs rating variations in particular in Melbourne.
Agree. But Nova seem to be making very little effort with Smooth at the moment. Not only in Melbourne. Smooth is on DAB in the other capitals and they make zero effort to even let people know its there. Despite this, I hear it in a lot of shops and cafes. Imagine what they could do with just a tiny bit of promotion and localising some content.
Do they have announcers on their DAB stations? I think Smooth rates well in both of their FM markets, of course they could do better but do you think different presenters in each market would make a difference?
They have some sporadic (voice tracked) announcers on the DAB stations but itâs all very generic. Iâm not sure different presenters are required, but what IS required is some actual promotion of the stations. If people knew they existed they would do much better.

IS required is some actual promotion
That would be smart. Is there money in DAB for the networks? I would be very keen to know if there was. I do believe youâll see Nova/ARN/SCA start to invest more in DAB as time goes on. As in announcers & promotions ect. But who will be the first to make the bold move?
Smoothâs brekkie show in Melbourne rates pretty well
Melbourne seems to rate less than Sydney on a regular basis. Sure breakfast rates and is also one of the only slots that is local. I donât think Nova will ever put local announcers for their DAB+ only stations but Sydney and Melbourne should be truly local not voice tracked to make it seem local using the same announcer for both cities.
Itâs just poor form itâs a metropolitan station there is no excuse. Yes I am aware they have been doing it since Smooth FM started it doesnât make it right.
Thereâs really no business case to make it local though. The daytime announcers at Melbourne based, and it rates better in Sydney, so that goes to show that the Sydney listeners donât care. The daytime announcers are not high profile, very few people outside the industry would recognize their names, and the stationâs focus is all about the music. Even if the announcers were local, theyâd essentially be reading off the same script anyway.
Yes however ratings vary. Some surveys they are Sydneyâs top FM station other surveys they arenât. Being local 100% of the time with presenters known to be from Sydney they could improve this.
Smooth in Melbourne are currently playing âThe Day You Went Awayâ by Wendy Mathews.
I listen to Smooth almost all day and most of the night and this is the first time Iâve heard this.
As much as I love the Smooth music, hopefully this is the start of a shake up of the same old songs we get day in, day out!

âThe Day You Went Awayâ
That is a great song! I also heard Whitney Houstonâs âSaving all my love for youâ and Mariah Careyâs âHeroâ yesterday.
Maybe theyâre throwing in a few easy hits to save listeners from jumping to Easy Music 2UE or 3MP.
