9 have officially won another year in Brisbane / Gold Coast. They’ve also secured a win for the 4pm local news.
I believe that’s their fourth straight win (and ninth in eleven, with 2018-19 being the outliers)?
With Tipping Point Australia to launch after the Australian Open next year, I wouldn’t be surprised if Nine News continues its ratings domination in the league markets, while all eyes would be on Melbourne to see if its news ratings sees a resurgence or not.
Note sure about that… as Hot Seat is Brisbane’s best performing market.

Week 40 2022
With the beginning of daylight savings the five-city numbers trended down, Seven by an average of 40,000 and Nine by 12,000.
Nine extended its Sydney lead and was the only east coast bulletin to build an audience though only by 3,000. Seven slipped further behind by 8,000.
Big drops were seen in Melbourne with Seven losing 19,000 and Nine down by 15,000 with Seven maintaining its big lead.
After winning the ratings survey last week, Nine Brisbane dropped by 12,000 this week but was still ahead of Seven in the closest of the 5-city markets.
Nine Adelaide was up by 2,000 with Seven dropping by 17,000 but retaining its commanding lead with almost as many viewers as Seven Perth.
Perth bulletins bucked the downward trend. With no DST or AFL to contend with Seven was up 5,000 and Nine 10,000.
Compared to week 40 of last year Seven was down 4% and Nine down 8%. Seven’s bulletins in Brisbane and Adelaide were on par with 2022 while Nine Adelaide was down by 26% contrasting to Nine Perth that was up 31%.
With all the talk of yearly wins based on “weeks won” there is also the average daily audience to consider. These are the overnight numbers up to the end of Week 40.
As you can see in Brisbane and to a lesser extent Sydney the story is a lot closer. In Brisbane, Seven could easily gain some viewers at 6pm to make a claim for “your number one 6pm news” or even enough to win across the full hour. There are still eight weeks left in the survey period.
The 7,000 margin in Sydney is also a lot closer than recent years.
So far 6pm is close. 14 v 18 compared to the 10 v 22 on average during the survey year and it’s even closer during the whole year 19 v 21 compared to 15 v 25

Week 41 2022
There was a general upward trend in news viewing across the 6pm hour in a big week for news. Seven’s 5-city audience was up by 12,000 while Nine’s edged up by 4,000.
Some numbers went against recent trends with Seven winning in Sydney, Nine winning the 6pm segment in Melbourne and Seven winning at 6pm in Brisbane and coming very close to a win across the hour.
Seven ended up winning all markets except Brisbane where Nine’s margin was just 700.
Seven’s Sydney result was up 4% on week 41 of 2022 while Nine was down 7%. Nine Melbourne was also up slightly while Nine was down 9% in Brisbane and 22% in Adelaide while posting a 9% improvement in Perth. Seven lost 7% in Melbourne, 1% in Brisbane and 6% in Perth while continuing it improves Adelaide result, up 4%.

Week 42 2022
Overall, 6pm news viewing was well down this week with Seven down an average 28,000 and Nine slipping by 39,000. That was despite of perhaps because of the big news story out of the Middle East. Though lead in viewing from the afternoon games shows was down including Hot Seat that had its lowest audience of the survey period.
Seven had a rare though in some cases very narrow win across all bulletins with every bulletin rating lower than in the equivalent week last year.
The Sydney market was basically a tie with Nine ahead at 6pm and Seven at 6.30pm. For Nine it was their worst performance in the market this survey and the lowest weekly audience since January.
Seven in Melbourne bucked the downward trend and posted a 7,000 improvement while Nine lost 15,000 viewers.
Seven notched up another win in Brisbane by less than 1,000 but it will help the bulletin’s average across the year in a tight contest with Nine.
Seven won Adelaide easily despite a 5,000 drop while Nine was one of the better performers compared to the previous week. In Perth Seven lost 8,000 and Nine 7,000.
So, Seven is no longer Seven? (sarcasm)

Week 43 2022
Nine News had a better week, up 20,000 from week 43 while Seven News lost 27,000 and recorded its lowest rating week of the year.
In Sydney, Nine was up 7,000 while Seven lost 6,000 to its lowest weekday result since March.
In Melbourne, Seven was down 24,000 with its lowest rating so far this year leading Nine to win just its second week of the year.
In Brisbane it was a week featuring anchors broadcasting live from bushfire areas. The coverage was on par with the previous week and a tie after rounding but Seven was slightly ahead to add another weekly win to its tally. Even so, both bulletins were at levels not seen since March.
Seven powered ahead in Adelaide to buck the downward trend and added 4,000 to the previous week and was Seven’s only bulletin to rate higher than last year.
Perth saw an 8,000 gain by Nine that was 41% higher than week 43 of 2022.
7 in Brisbane seem to have had many clear wins in both half hours of late. Will be interesting to see the average audience numbers for the year, compared to weeks won.

Week 44 2022
Overall a better week for Seven’s news numbers in week 44 with a 5-city market increase of 40,000 viewers while Nine was down slightly by 7,500.
In Sydney, Seven did well to win the 6pm segment, though Nine won 6.30 by enough to win the hour by just 3,000.
Seven was back on top in Melbourne with a 15,000 improvement. Nine was also up by 4,000 after winning two nights.
Seven had its fourth consecutive win in Brisbane, up by 8,000 as Nine lost 10,000 to their lowest result for this survey period. Seven was up 8% on week 44 on 2022 while Nine was down 8%.
Nine had a 5,000 improvement in Adelaide but was down 30% on last year while Seven edged down by 1,000.
Seven improved its Perth audience by 3,000 as Nine lost 7,000 though was up 16% on last year.
Editorial: The Brisbane trend is interesting with Nine’s falling audience seeming to coincide with their decision to become part of the story in relation to Victims of Crime. It will be interesting to see what the response is. Will they double down or back off? Friday was an interesting contrast with Seven in Brisbane leading with comprehensive bush fire coverage while Nine’s opening story was on victims of crime including an in studio interview of a reporter (que important story). The gap between the two bulletins in the calendar year is less than 1,000 now and closing each week that Seven wins. Interestingly the trend is also away from Nine at breakfast where it used to record large wins.

Week 45 2022
Seven dominated news viewing in week 45, with just three weeks of survey to go, winning all markets and all timeslots.
In the 5-city market both bulletins were up, Seven by 16,000 and Nine by 17,000.
Sydney dragged down the overall results with Seven dropping by 9,000 and Nine losing 17,000 on average each night.
Melbourne results were more positive with both bulletins improving around 15,000 though Seven was down on the equivalent week last year and Nine was up.
Brisbane saw Nine recover from last week’s survey low but not enough to win. Seven was down by less than 1,000 but notched up its 14th win of the survey. Across the calendar year, Nine has so far won 26 weeks so it is possible if Seven’s winning streak continues for its bulletin to tie the year on weekly wins. On average number of viewers for the year Nine is currently ahead by less than 400 so that measure will end up a very close result as well.
In Adelaide, Seven picked up 11,000 viewers and was up 17% on the previous year. Nine was steady and down 25%.
In Perth Nine did well to improve by 6,000 and be up 20% year-on-year while Seven slipped by 2,000.
I noted that last week Nine News starting running promos on house renovation rather than crime
That lead must be slowly frittering away. 7 has been winning consistently lately.

Week 46 2022
In a poor week for 6pm news viewing, Seven won all markets across the hour for the second consecutive week. However, Seven’s five-city number was 38,000 lower than the previous week as Nine dropped an average of 51,000.
Sydney, bucked the downward trend where Seven secured its 11th win of the survey an 15th win of the calendar year with an 8,000 victory over Nine. Seven edged up by 3,000 against Nine’s bulletin that was 1,000 higher.
Big drops in Melbourne, 30,000 for Seven and 35,000 for Nine. For Nine, it was the bulletin’s lowest result of the year and included three days below the 200k mark.
Another win for Seven in Brisbane brought its tally for the year to 20, with a chance of equalling Nine’s 26-week tally. Seven was down 1,000 as Nine slipped 6,000 with neither impressing viewers. With each week, Seven’s average viewer number is edging closer to Nine’s.
Adelaide saw Seven down 5,000 and Nine down 9,000 to be 29% down on the same week last year while Seven was up 22%.
While Seven continued to dominate in Perth, the bulletin was down 11% on 2022 while Nine was up 26% with though both were down week-on-week.
And this week Nine revived a “We’re With You” campaign showing Nine reporters and bush fires (the last one was floods). Stay tuned for next week

It’s awful.
Starts with Melissa Downes saying, “Tonight Queensland is burning.” Well actually, no it wasn’t. There were terrible, extensive, damaging blazes in several areas but by no means was it statewide.
Hyper-sensationalism.
Just what someone impacted by a bushfire needs, a reporter sticking a microphone in their face and recording their troubles.

Week 47 2022
Nine news was up in all markets in the penultimate week of the survey period for a total 5-city improvement of 13,000 while Seven was up in two markets but lost ground in three for a total loss of 9,000 viewers.
Nine secured its only market win in Sydney with a good result that was 9% better than week 47 of 2022 while Seven lost viewers and was down 4%. Nine’s bulletin at 6pm was notable for reaching the 27 weeks won mark for the year while the full hour is now at 28 weeks won. So Nine is clearly Sydney’s numb er one news again.
Nine also did well in Melbourne in a week when the bulletin was under scrutiny showing it can still perform with a win in the 6pm segment of the bulletin. However, Seven had enough viewers at 6.30pm to win across the hour by less than 2,000 viewers. Nine was up 13k from the previous week and Seven 2k.
Seven lost 7k in Brisbane but still won at 6pm and across the hour to continue closing the gap on Nine. Nine is now only 300 ahead of Seven in the average for Mon-Fri across the calendar year.
Nine improved by 7,000 in Adelaide but was down 23% year-on-year as Seven slipped by 3,000 but was up 7% from 2022.
Seven Perth was up 6,000 against a static Nine though Nine continues to do better than 2022.

Despite a week to go, Nine claiming a win for the year in Brisbane - even has the fine print.
I mean Nine can make a claim, because they have enough numbers across the hour; though, Seven News still wins the 6pm half-hour, and has the chance to make its own promo about it.
Bottomline: Brisbane, with whatever sensationalism and ACA/Today Tonight-esque reporting it had for both newsrooms, once again becomes a toss-up for this ratings year.
