Seven v Nine News Ratings Comparisons

This is only one theory that I have but I reckon Nine’s win at 6:30pm could also be attributed to more superior league coverage (Nine of course having been the league rights holder since 1992). This would be despite Jonathan Uptin replacing Wally Lewis (who stepped down for health reasons) at the start of the year.

I mean that is also a factor to Nine staying No. 1 in Brisbane most times of the year.

As long as Nine holds the free-to-air rugby league broadcasting rights in the two major league markets (Sydney and Brisbane), they’ll remain hard to catch especially during winter.

That being said, though, I also wonder how the Lions have fared when their games have been shown on the main Seven channel, and not 7mate, in Brisbane when their games don’t clash with the news.

I think it is more that Nine has better hooks for segments later in the news than Seven. Their segments that are run towards the end of the bulletin are promoted starting the night before and across the day. While they might not live up to what is promised in the promo they seem to work. Even during the Rugby League off season Nine rates better than Seven.

Brisbane also loves the ACA trash so they switch on early ready for 7pm.

Week 48 2022

Congratulations to Seven, as the survey year draws to a close, for winning all 40 weeks of the 5-city metro news ratings.

Week 48 produced generally good results for news viewing with Seven improving its average audience by 28,000 while Nine was up by 17,000.

Seven secured another win in Sydney with a 15,000 margin to bring its total for the survey to 12 wins. That is up from 2022 when the bulletin won 7 weeks.

For Peter Hitchener’s final weekday result, Nine Melbourne was up 17,000 for Nine’s only market win. It was only the third weekly win of the year for the bulletin. That compares to 2022 when the bulletin won 7 weeks in survey.

Seven had another win in Brisbane to edge closer to Nine in average audience and weeks won across the calendar year. Seven’s bulletin from its new set was up 11,000 while Nine improved 9,000. Nine finished the survey with a higher average audience than Seven across the hour with the 23 to 17 winning margin equal
to the 2022 result.

Not much change in Adelaide with Seven up 3,000 and Nine down 3,000 with Seven more than double Nine’s audience.

Perth was similar where Seven was down less than 1,000 and Nine unchanged.

I will do the calculations and repair a report based on average audiences with comparisons to 2022.

Hasn’t seen Seven News dominating the Melbourne market like that for a few years.

Nine has a lot of work to do to win more weeks in Melbourne in 2024. Tipping Point needs to fire so that viewers stay around for the new presenting team of Alicia Loxley and Tom Steinfort.

2023 Survey - average audience

Comparison to 2022.

The average audience numbers matched the weeks won with Seven dominating in the markets it won while there were close results in Nine’s two victories. The numbers represent the average of the overnights only with consolidated and streaming adding to the totals. The 2022 numbers were adjusted for the OzTAM errors.

Compared to 2022 all but two bulletins had lower numbers than last year with Seven down an average of 4% and Nine down 8%. Seven Adelaide and Nine Perth did well to buck the trend.

The biggest fall was 21% for Nine and Adelaide while Seven Perth also suffered a bug fall of 15%. Nine Sydney dropped by double figures. Nine Melbourne that will see a new anchor team next year while down 6% was again Seven that also dropped 4%.

When Saturday numbers come in tomorrow we can look at weekend results.

Honestly not sure what happened in Adelaide this year, were ratings falling for Seven last year due to Jane Doyle presenting solo? Kudos to Rosanna and Will though on a tremendous year for Seven.

But now I’m questioning whether or not Nine are going to persist with Brenton and Kate for 2024, which will officially mark 10 years of the duo. But if it was to change, there aren’t many options to replace them.

Since Seven has redeployed local resources back into Adelaide it’s improved.

A week ago it was quoted that 9 was only an average of 300 ahead of 7 across the hour in Brisbane.
7 won this week, and now for the survey year, 9 is 2000 ahead? Not sure of that Maths?!

That number was for the calendar year.

Ok.
Thought it was for the survey year.

I find these campaigns are very weak when their main opposition is Seven, they seems to be stuck in the past trying to gain viewers from 10.

Brenton and Kate have done well to last a decade, especially going up against John and Jane for the first half of that time.

If I remember correctly, they gained some viewers in 2015 (when Seven was a distant second to Nine nationally, not helped by dismal numbers in Sydney and Melbourne) and 2020/1, when Seven “axed” its local afternoon bulletin, but overall Seven has remained on top in the City of Churches as they have been since the turn of the century.

As for Perth - well, same old story. Their only hope is when Rick and Sue are both no longer at the helm, but knowing Perthites (if that’s the right word for it) - they’ll just stick to Seven.

37 weeks won by Seven News in Melbourne is easily their best result, eclipsing the 34 weeks they won in 2009 (though it must be noted that the six weeks Nine won were the only ones they won in any market that year), which was a very huge news year (with events such as the Black Saturday bushfires and Michael Jackson’s death).

In Sydney, the twelve weeks Seven News won is their most since 2011 (14 weeks). Gives Nine plenty to think about going into 2024…

Week 49 2022

From a 6pm news perspective the end of the survey period is very obvious with week 49 the first week of summer ratings with big drops across several bulletins.

Across the 5-city market, Seven was down 52,000 while Nine dropped by 46,000. It was Seven’s lowest rated week of the year.

Wins on the east coast went against the trend during the survey.

Seven won Sydney by almost 20,000, despite dropping 15,000 from the previous week as Nine was down by 17,000.

Nine had its second consecutive win and just its fourth of the year in Melbourne to be 20,000 ahead of Seven. Seven’s bulletin was down 17,000 week-on-week while Nine dropped 13,000.

And in Brisbane Seven continues to close in on Nine’s lead for the calendar year with another narrow win across the hour.

In Adelaide Nine News bucked the trend with a 6,000 improvement while Seven edged down by 5,000.

Seven in Perth was the only other bulletin to rise, up 3,000 against Nine’s 7,000 drop.

The one thing that looks weird in that weeks-won graphic is Brisbane.

Not being an SEQ resident, and I apologise if it’s been asked before - is there anything known about either bulletin that sees such a big drop away towards Nine in the 6.30 half hour - or has it been close enough to a statistical tie in Brisbane all year that it’s basically just noise and a small shuffle (10k last week) was enough to tip it in Nine’s favour in the second half-hour?

The only suggestion I can offer is that Nine continue with news and current affairs at 7pm with A Current Affair and viewers are aware of that so they switch over whereas news ends at 7pm with Home and Away.

I feel that Nine do a better job with their featured story each night. Both bulletins have some story that is promoted, often starting at the end of the previous night’s bulletin and across that night and the next day. The stories run near the end of the bulletin before the weather.

Nine’s promos and stories are the trashy consumer ones that the bulletin is known for - how to save 50% off your electricity, where to get a free refrigerator - free stuff, diets, discounts, medical break through etc. Historically these are the stories that used to run regularly on Nine’s 5.30 show (Brisbane) Extra so Nine are well know for this and it seems to work. The story gets promoted throughout the bulletin as well and it’s a Must Watch report. Whoever comes up with the stories and the promos seems to know the market better that Seven. Seven try but they never seem to be at the same level.
