Seven News Melbourne’s figures were partly boosted by Peter Mitchell’s return on Wednesday, and also the start of the new AFL season with exclusive coverage from inside the MCG and Marvel Stadium.

Some green signifying gains this week after two weeks of almost solid red thanks to improved numbers especially in Sydney and Brisbane. In the 5-city market, Seven dropped 4,000 with Melbourne dropping 26,000. Nine News, however was up 13,000 from week 12.

Seven did well to win in Brisbane with Sharyn presenting solo across the whole week - winning every night except Friday that was a tie. Nine in SEQ was down 22% on week 13 of 2021.

In Adelaide Seven was notable for being up 8% on 2021 while Nine was down 15% on the equivalent week.

Week 16 2021

The first of two “non-ratings” weeks at Easter saw numbers well down on recent results. A few small increases failed to stop the flood of red in the table with Seven down 42,000 and Nine down 73,000. The largest drops were Seven in Sydney (22k) and Melbourne (20k) and Nine Sydney (47k).

In Melbourne, Seven’s poor Friday result at 7pm probably cost it the week with Nine winning across the hour. Major troubles continue for Nine in Brisbane with Seven pulling further ahead as Nine posts its lowest weekly audience in 2022. They will be hoping their “News for Queenslanders by Queenslanders” promo running on high rotation finds some traction.

As expected most bulletins are down on week 16 of 2021 that was not a lead in to Easter.

No surprise that Nine Adelaide was down 10k after technical difficulties impacted Wednesday numbers. Seven Brisbane was down 7k while Nine improved by 14k to be within 2k across the hour; while it was another win for Nine at 6.30.

I do think Bec Maddern has played a part in lifting Seven Melbourne’s numbers. Money well spent here. Plus the new graphics have proven to be successful.

I wouldn’t say dominated… seven has been very close to nine for many years. It’s only now we are see a wider gap appearing between the two.

Nine Melbourne did great during the COVID pandemic, but since COVID went out of news I did notice Nine Melbourne slide down
