For the second straight year Seven won all 52 weeks in the 5-city total plus in Adelaide and Perth. Nine, however managed to improve their situation for a comprehensive victory in Melbourne while taking the crown from Seven in Brisbane while retaining their dominance in Sydney.

Just taking a look at this. Of course you can see that Nine has held major dominance on the east coast.

Although, Seven Sydney has improved (in quite a small quantity) compared to the last year.

Seven Brisbane has really fallen but if trends are anything to go by, I think they should be ok in 2021.

Seven Melbourne’s the biggest loser this year. They were doing so well last time, they should have kept that momentum…

You’d think that Seven News will win several ratings weeks in the three East Coast metro markets (but with Nine remaining #1 overall, of course) during 2021 if the Tokyo Olympics go ahead?

Ratings Year

Full Year

Average overnight audiences for the full year now available. No significant differences from the official ratings period with most bulletins rating slightly lower when the summer schedule is added in. Brisbane incredibly close - had to add an extra decimal to separate the 6pm segment.

If 10 thinks those numbers for Brisbane and Adelaide are holding up well, they’re kidding themselves. A whopping 10% down for the whole year after mainly solid ratings for most of the year. Clearly the centralisation has hit the most affected stations hard.

Yep, proof is in the pudding!

They clearly need to go local again. That is shocking. (But in saying that, the damage has probably already been done)

Quite funny how Perth had the biggest increase. Good news for 10 on that front at least.

Clearly Perth viewers still enjoying watching 10. Monika did well but it seems there has been a big swing upwards in Perth when Narelda returned which proves that Narelda is clearly more popular.

They should’ve at least tried to convince Rebecca Morse and Georgina Lewis to relocate to Melbourne/Sydney respectively and have them present the news if they wanted to centralise the operation.

It also seems that Perth viewers really dislike Nine News, given that their ratings fell 6% this year while the other channels experienced growth.

First week of the new ratings year.

All bulletins were up from the final week of 2020 that included low rating Christmas Day with Nine closing the gap significantly on recent results.

Adelaide was a highlight for Nine were the bulletin won three out of five days plus the 6.30pm segment; though Seven News finishes at 6:45 on four nights due to BBL commitments.

In Sydney Nine’s bulletin beat the new presenting team on Seven and performed comparability better than week 1 of 2020.

Very close in Adelaide.

Nine have massive problems in Perth. Terrible numbers over there. How is the local 5pm news hour going?

Exactly what I was thinking, and definitely shows improvement after Nine Adelaide struggled to make a dent on these charts for probably a few years!

@TV.Cynic Did 10 Brisbane and Adelaide have YOY growth at any point during the year? Up until the last quarter?

Up until the change - during the ratings period - Brisbane was down 6% but Adelaide was up 2%.

That didn’t take long :grinning: - Nine wins its first week since January 2018. Big wins for Nine across the east coast to an over 10% improvement on week 2 of 2020. That was led by Brisbane up 23% and Adelaide up 25%, though in Perth the bulletin was down 5%.

Seven dropped in Sydney, Melbourne as well as Adelaide that was down 16%.

Huge probs to Nine! Winning Adelaide is certainly close with their momentum. If this continues, these ratings wars between Seven News & Nine News will be interesting for 2021.

Come on Nine! Step up your game in Perth.

And come on 7, claim back Brisbane!

I’m reasonably confident that in 2021 we’ll be talking about another successful year in the ratings for Nine News Sydney.

Seven needs to relaunch its entire news service (right up to the general reporting style, etc.) if they’re to gain any longterm momentum in this market. With the way things seem to have been going recently, it actually surprises me that ABC News at 7pm hasn’t yet overtaken Seven in the Sydney ratings.
