Seven Sport

Seven has secured broadcast rights to the controversial International Swimming League, a series of seven meetings in the US and Europe starting in October, culminating with the finale in Las Vegas just before Christmas. The league, not sanctioned by the governing body FINA, will comprise eight teams composed of both women and men, with several Australian swimmers involved. All events will be streamed live on 7plus with highlights on 7TWO.

Could those BBL games be exclusive to Fox?

I think he is paying the price for losing the Melbourne Cup Carnival and botching the current cricket broadcast deal, under which Seven has no streaming rights to any match it is covering.

Could you please elaborate on why the current cricket broadcast deal is botched?

Can’t really blame him on the cricket deal. Tim Worner was the key driver on this deal. Kerry Stokes very much in favour of it at the time.

No one dayers, no streaming, not all BBL, and the matches they have are simulcast on Fox Sports.

Somebody in the comments mentioned David Barham as a possible replacement.

Please, no.

Indeed.

Maybe just maybe the idiot FTA executives have finally realised “simulcasting” with separate pay TV is bad for their brand.

The issue now is looking at the current broadcast contracts and the fact that their are no restrictions in terms of technology or legislation requirements to commit to.

I would expect the next broadcast deal of a major sport that one company gets all rights and it’s up to the broadcaster to on-sell / provide access to pay TV/streaming companies and the same applies niche sports which are not on anti-siphoning list.

With the AFL wanting to get a 2 year extension deal with Seven I would expect Seven to get all the rights with the option to have interstate games on their streaming platform 7plus.

It’s perhaps more a sign that Warburton is serious about shaking up Seven

(Seven CEO James) Warburton says expanding Seven’s motorsport coverage to TCR, S5000, Supercars and even Formula 1 in the future could be valuable for both the network and the sport.

“Whether we are promoting the Erebus Kiss Supercar or Rubens Barrichello who happened to be an AFL changing room (on Friday night), the power of the Seven brand across its assets is what motorsport partners really like,” Warburton told Speedcafe.com.

“We promote across the assets so we think we are a good partner, but for a deal it has to commercially stack up regardless of the sport.

“Motorsport is a great opportunity and a good revenue opportunity for the network.”

Apparently, the FTA rights for the 2020 Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix are up for grabs, as Ten’s deal only covers 2018 & 2019, judging by this article from September 2017: https://www.speedcafe.com/2017/09/29/free-air-formula-1-coverage-slashed/

With that in mind, it would be interesting if Seven grabs the FTA rights for it, as well as the 1-hour highlights of overseas races on 7mate on Monday nights. Given the date that the 2020 Australian F1 would be held at, there should be no conflict with the AFL.

The Australian F1 may not conflict with the AFL but may clash with AFLW and even Sydney autumn racing carnival.

there is that one article that says 10’s F1 deal expires at the end of this year, but then you’ve got another article saying that the Fox Sports deal expires at the end of 2022, with 10 expiring at the same time.

Australian Test captain to call BBL matches exclusively on Seven

Seven’s new head of sport Lewis Martin commented:

“It’s a wonderful and rare opportunity to hear the insights of a current Test captain, but also to have a ripping bloke like Tim join our team.”
Looks like Seven have trumped Foxtel’s Allan Boader don’t miss a ball campaign !
