Another sport now going from Seven to Nine.
At one stage Seven had the summer of tennis, Wimbledon, and the Olympics - all now two dials up.
Do we know if Seven will bid for the Commonwealth Games in 2026, and/or which network will televise it?
Doubt Seven would bid for it given the new AFL rights deal and associated costs with all the new shows and personalities.
Itâs a smaller version of the games so I could see them still bidding. They wonât have to hire many sport specialists given itâs 10 events & can use the world feed for what they donât want to spend
I think 9 will get it as they can link it with their Olympics coverages
The fact that it is only 10 sports is what makes me think they will pass it up - wonât be good ROI, especially with the timezone difference, even if they do rely on the World Feed.
Would be surprised with Nine didnât get the rights.
Seven seems to have locked in Cricket, AFL, Horse Racing, Supercars as its anchor sports. They have a summer sport, winter sport and Horse / Motor racing all year round. They donât really need anything else. Other than maybe bidding for Sate of Origin.
I think Sevenâs rights to that expires at the end of next year. Wouldnât be surprised if Ten picks them up again in conjunction with Foxtel.
10 wonât unless it includes P+ exclusivity. Only Seven will work with Fox now.
But 10 picked up some NBL rounds for FTA which donât have P+ exclusivity?
They also worked out a deal with Fox Sports to retain the AusGP and Aus MotoGP rounds since theyâre on the anti-siphoning list.
If the economics work and Fox needs a partner, never say never.
And the Commonwealth Games are being held in Scotland - time difference means most of the major events will air overnight - canât see Paramount going alone for this if they bid for it given the poor ROI.
I think thatâs more because NBL was just looking for a FTA partnership. They didnât want to leave ESPN who have all things basketball (NBA, WNBA, Boomers, Oapls etc)
Point is, 10 will look at sport if the economics are right. Yes Iâm sure they wouldâve wanted exclusivity for some of the bigger leagues like AFL, NRL but for some of the lower stuff like Supercars theyâd likely look at a shared arrangement again.
