From November 14 to 17, SEN’s production company, Rainmaker, will play a crucial role in capturing Cam Smith’s return to Australian shores, when he contests the 2024 NSW Open at Murray Downs Golf & Country Club. The tournament – which will also feature Lucas Herbert and Geoff Ogilvy – will be broadcast live on 7plus from November 15 to 17, as well as live on 7two on November 17, from 12pm to 5pm (AEDT).

Seven’s Spring Racing Carnival a runaway hit

Australia’s #1 racing coverage reaches 4.2 million

The Seven Network’s live and free coverage of the 2024 Spring Racing Carnival has been a runaway hit with viewers, reaching 4.2 million Australians so far on Seven and 7plus Sport.

From Epsom Day at Royal Randwick and Turnbull Stakes Day at Flemington on 5 October to Thousand Guineas Day at Caulfield and The Hunter Race Day at Newcastle on Saturday, the Spring Racing Carnival on Seven and 7plus Sport this year won millions of fans.

With horse racing coverage 52 weeks a year, Seven is Australia’s undisputed leader in racing broadcasting.

Seven’s Spring Racing Carnival coverage, which includes celebrated meets on the Australian thoroughbred racing calendar and a procession of Group 1 races, has scored an average national total TV audience of 178,000.

Everest Day at Royal Randwick and the Caulfield Cup at Caulfield Racecourse reached

1.39 million people and had an average audience of 557,000. The Big Dance day at Royal Randwick reached 1.51 million, with an average audience of 192,000, while the Cox Plate at Mooney Valley reached 1.04 million with an average audience of 162,000 and the Golden Eagle day at Rosehill Gardens reached 1 million and had an average audience of 119,000.

Australia’s greatest sports broadcaster Bruce McAvaney again led racing’s #1 team joined by Seven racing’s Emma Freedman, Jason Richardson, Katelyn McDonald, Daniel MacPherson, Lizzie Jelfs and Kate Waterhouse with guest appearances from three-time Group 1 winning jockey Kathy O’Hara.

Seven Network Head of Horse Racing, Andrew Hore-Lacy, said: “This Spring, Seven’s live and free thoroughbred racing coverage has once again been the go-to for fans of many of Australia’s most recognised race days.

“Our dedication to thoroughbred racing is part of our DNA, resonating with racing enthusiasts and lovers of an Australian tradition every week, year-round. Seven’s unrivalled commentary team and in-depth coverage continues to elevate the live sport experience for viewers, offering insights, storytelling and analysis like no other.

“At Seven, racing is a passion shared across the entire network. Our audience reach and year-on-year growth for Australia’s most celebrated events, from the iconic Cox Plate and Caulfield Cup to the thrill of contemporary days like The Everest, Golden Eagle and Big Dance Day, reflect our deep commitment to Australian racing,” he said.

“Seven values our strong partnerships with the Australian racing industry including Racing NSW, Racing Victoria, the Melbourne Racing Club, the Australian Turf Club and Moonee Valley Racing Club – and together, we’re committed to driving the national platform, further growth and investment in the sport’s future.

“We also value our relationships with all racing connections. We could not do what we do without the participants, and we thank the industry for recognising Seven as the home of racing, 52 weeks of the year,” Mr Hore-Lacy said.

The Spring Racing calendar is the pinnacle of Seven’s racing portfolio, which covers the very best Australian thoroughbred racing live and free every Saturday as part of the most significant free-to-air broadcast deal in the history of the sport.

The long-term agreement to 2027 with Racing Victoria and Racing NSW, which includes key race days in conjunction with Racing Queensland and Racing SA, cements Seven as Australia’s home of racing.

In a bonus for racing fans, Racing WA and Seven recently signed a new multi-year partnership to showcase Western Australian thoroughbred racing, ensuring all thoroughbred race meetings in Western Australia are broadcast live and free on 7plus Sport.

A huge 2025 of racing on Seven starts on Saturday, 4 January, before the highlight of the summer racing calendar – the Magic Millions Raceday – is broadcast live and free direct from the Gold Coast Turf Club on Saturday, 11 January.

Seven’s thoroughbred racing coverage can be streamed live and free via 7plus Sport. Catch up on the best bits of Seven’s racing coverage here.

Seven is the home of Aussie athletics

Major Australian meets live and free on 7plus Sport

The Seven Network has strengthened its role as the home of Australian athletics, announcing a two-year extension to its long-term partnership with Athletics Australia.

Building on the momentum from the success of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games and the World Under 20 Championships, 7plus Sport will bring the best of the sport into homes across Australia through the network’s live streaming and broadcast video on demand platform.

Streaming exclusively on 7plus Sport will be four of the country’s most prestigious meets including Oceania’s one and only World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meet, the Maurie Plant Meet, as well as the 2025 Australian Athletics Championships.

Athletics Australia and Seven have been partners since 2021, with Seven playing a significant role in the sport’s continued growth across the country.

Athletics Australia CEO, Simon Hollingsworth, said: “Since the partnership began in 2021, Australian athletics has come a long way and it’s very exciting to have Seven on board as a partner once more as we enter a new era for our sport,

“From Cathy Freeman’s win in Sydney 2000 to Nina Kennedy flying to gold in Paris, Australians have long connected with the sport’s greatest moments, and we are delighted that this deal will ensure that athletics will continue to be shared and enjoyed by all Australians during this golden era.”

At the helm of the coverage will be the “voice of athletics”, with 7SPORT commentator Bruce McAvaney bringing to life the stories of the country’s top athletes along with the rest of Seven’s top commentary team.

While the season will mark the victory tour for the country’s most successful teams, it will also be the launch of a new campaign for many athletes vying for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo next September and provide a build up for para-athletes on the road to the next World Para Athletics Championships.

McAvaney said: “I can’t remember a more exciting time in Australian athletics. The performance by our team at the World Championships in Budapest in 2023 was surpassed by what happened in Paris just a few months ago and then backed up by an extraordinary result at the Paralympic Games and World Juniors in Peru.

“Our athletes are demanding world attention, and I firmly believe the sport is heading for a golden age,” he said.

Seven Network Commercial Director – Sport, Renee Quirk said: “As we embark on a new era of sports broadcasting with the recent launch of 7plus Sport, we are excited to continue our partnership with Athletics Australia to deliver the biggest track and field events in the country, live and free to all Australians.

“With an on-air team comprised of the greatest voices in world athletics, led by the incomparable Bruce McAvaney, Seven promises to deliver an exceptional broadcast for our biggest meets to fans across every corner of the nation, live and free on 7plus Sport.

“A passion and genuine investment in sport is at the forefront of everything we do at Seven, and we look forward to connecting our nation’s best athletes with even bigger audiences in 2025 and beyond,” she said.
Seven’s broadcast of the season will start with the Adelaide Invitational on Saturday, 15 February.

Channel 7 discuss hosting a rugby league show in 2025

The Seven Network may be about to dip their toe back in the rugby league waters.

Sunday Sesh understands that the network has held internal talks over starting their own rugby league show next year in a potential pointer to entering the fight for the game’s broadcast rights in coming months.

Seven were last involved with rugby league seven years ago when they won the rights to televise the 2017 World Cup.

It may be that the show runs during the State of Origin series as a test case.
