Seven (Southern Cross)

Capped these from the SCTV Tas. Facebook page.

Interesting to see they use the 7 promo’s with a SCTV logo coverup in the corner, and then a blurred effect on the end card around the 7 logo with the SCTV logo placed on top.

Meanwhile others will air with the Seven logo intact too. Years ago it was rare to see a 7 logo, now they’ll occur multiple times throughout an evening.

Isn’t that Hobart?

Looks like it.

Just saw the promo on Prime7 with that endcap so it must be story specific. I’d wondered if SC just chucked a local endcap on for their version.

Yeah, it’s a story from Tasmania this week, that’s why Southern Cross is advertising it more.

In a nutshell, Susan Neill-Fraser is in prison for the murder of her partner Bob Chappell on his yacht in 2009 but she’s always claimed her innocence and there wasn’t a lot of evidence for getting the conviction, has been simmering in Tasmania since she went to prison with various appeals and hopes of getting a re-trial. The family have obviously gone to Sunday Night now to get more exposure.

I remember that until fairly recently, SC/7 Central in most or all remote areas operated from a rebroadcast signal of BTQ7 (or similar), and because of the time zone difference all programmes appeared half an hour “early”.

Obviously it’s done differently now as programmes appear (or are scheduled to appear) “on time”, with the exception of SCTV, Ten and all multichannels in “Remote SA”. Evidently the feed for this area isn’t sourced from Adelaide. Does anyone know the technicalities here? I assume that SCTV in remote SA is coming from the same source as SC Central in NT/QLD - is Remote SA part of the SC Central “South” market area, so receives the same as remote NSW/VIC etc, which explains the time zone discrepancy? There is no similar discrepancy in Remote NT (at least not according to listings) which I would have expected if they received the SC Central “North” feed along with remote QLD.

Who is responsible for the Ten service in remote areas - I see it listed as just “Ten” in remote SA - is this a JV station?

Remote areas of SA receive SCTV Central South, which is a feed of 7 Melbourne. Same with Ten Central South/Ten Melbourne. Imparja South is also broadcast here, but it is based on a 9 Sydney feed. So at all times, remote SA channels are half an hour ‘early’, even during daylight savings.

There is. The guide you’re looking at would be incorrect. < shameful plug> Use Sattvguide for an accurate guide</shameful plug>

Central Digital Television Pty Ltd operates Ten Central and is jointly owned by SCA and Imparja. Playout comes from SCA in Canberra like Ten Darwin and Ten SA.

As an interesting note, I believe Imparja south replays Nine News Darwin late at night, despite using the Sydney feed.
I was in a rural area of Victoria last week and the satellite box had Imparja South.

I’m not aware of a late-night replay of Darwin’s news, but it wouldn’t surprise me if they did. It’s still scheduled at 6.30pm AEDT on Gem via Imparja.

Thanks for all that info! So, the reason for the time difference is because they choose not to delay the feeds into SA, rather than because they are using a rebroadcast signal from somewhere over the state border? I assume SC Central is played out from Canberra, and Ten Central from er… Alice? Or the Hub?

I assume Imparja broadcasts their channels “on time” in SA and NT?

Because it would be too expensive to offer channels for every timezone. Most people who watch the remote channels live in AEDT and AEST timezones.

Nope. Either AEDT or AEST depending which ‘zone’ they’re broadcast in. See the table below for clarification.

Remote NSW, Victoria, Tasmania and SA channels:

Channel Source Timezone
SCTV Central - South 7 Melbourne AEDT
7TWO Central - South 7TWO Melbourne AEDT
7mate Central 7mate Melbourne AEDT
Imparja South Nine Sydney AEDT
GO! South 9Go! Sydney AEDT
GEM 9Gem Sydney AEDT
TEN Central - South TEN Melbourne AEDT
ELEVEN - South ELEVEN Melbourne AEDT
ONE Central ONE Melbourne AEDT

Remote Queensland and NT channels:

Channel Source Timezone
SCTV Central - North 7 Brisbane AEST
7TWO Central - North 7TWO Brisbane AEST
7mate Central 7mate Melbourne AEDT
Imparja North Nine Brisbane AEST
GO! North 9Go! Brisbane AEST
GEM 9Gem Sydney AEDT
TEN Central - North TEN Brisbane AEST
ELEVEN - North ELEVEN Brisbane AEST
ONE Central ONE Melbourne AEDT

Is there any particular reason why 7mate/9Gem/ONE have only one feed, while the other multichannels have North and South feeds? I’m presuming the North and South feeds for 7TWO/9Go!/Eleven are for advertising purposes?

Something to do with 7mate, 9Gem and One being HD channels, I think.

More than likely due to costs because satellite space is very expensive compared to land-based transmission and HD channels take up more space. Other networks skimp out because of space limitations too, like SBS not launching Viceland HD and only having a single Food Network feed in AEDT for all timezones. ABC also dropped their SD simulcast when they launched ABC HD. GWN7 not getting 7flix is probably related too.

Not really as the advertising is identical on both North and South variants. They do it so news bulletins (and rarely some programs) are more local and so daylight savings time differences don’t have as much of an impact as they used to pre-digital.

I presume all on-air promos and signposts give the time in AEST/AEDT, and viewers in NT/SA have became accustomed to tuning in half an hour earlier, an hour an a half earlier or whatever?

It should be done like the US networks, 8PM E, 4PM WA.

That would mean custom promos though, increasing cost - and many channels (like CDT Ten and most of the multi-channels) appear to be a straight rebroadcast of the respective metro channel. I believe Imparja and SCTV Central have their own on-air branding - or does SCTV Central just take Seven branding?

It’s a bit confusing that some multichannels broadcast in AEST and some in AEDT, even in the same area/market.

You’re right about the promos. SC’s appear on 7TWO and 7mate, but Imparja leaves the Channel 9 promos intact on Gem and Go!

I always thought if they were going to make their own promos anyway, then they should include a central time like the US networks.
