It’s not the first time we’ve had people come down from Sydney to present Melbourne’s news (yes I know Tom is originally from Melbourne but still). Helen Kapalos did so very successfully on 10 for several years (her being let go wasn’t a ratings thing). We also had Anne Fulwood for a bit co-reading with David Johnston…but I think we all know how that turned out…
He absolutely will not be doing that. They will be relying solely on an interest factor for people to tune in in January.
Just a little different- Liz has been the face of national programs for 30yrs and has name recognition. Tom is an odd choice, especially when locally they have Tony Jones, Dougal Beatty Clint Stanaway and Chris Kohler
Sure. But, Nine is changing from someone very recognisable to the market to someone whose face at best is vaguely familiar from that short time on Today. Quite the trade.
That perception is just bizare in my view. He went to school here. He grew up here. Goes to Richmond games. He might not be familiar to the audience but you it’s not fair to just dismiss the reality he is from Melbourne.
Mike did two fill in summers on Melbourne’s News prior to commencing weekends. He’s also the weekend presenter, not the main weekday presenter. Seven have built Mike’s profile up (to Melbourne viewers) over the past 6-7 years. He’s now well established in this city.
Tim McMillan also spent time in Melbourne when he first started at Nine News, with a year in Sydney in 2011. At the time not many viewers (not even myself) knew he was from Perth.
I also remember Mike Amor briefly presented the 4:30 News when it moved to Sydney in 2006, then the presented the 6:00pm bulletin in that market on Christmas Day that year. Wasn’t long before he was back Stateside.
