Seven News Presenters and Reporters (2015-Sept 2020)

Tyson silly comment Nick McCallum is progressing nicely in the Presenter chair. Nick is also giving credibility to the 7 News Melbourne brand.

It’s just my opinion. Nick is a great reporter, but can be quite lost in the studio.

Just when you thought it was safe to start watching 7’s afternoon news in Victoria… Jacqui Felgate is back.

Is Robert Ovadia working as a US correspondent temporarily or permanently? I have seen several of his reports from Los Angeles over the past week.

@JohnsonTV I haven’t seen Mike Amor lately so he must be on holidays with Rob filling in for him.

Agree with the above but Nick has definitely improved over the last few months, does have a sense of credibility about him.

They probably should have pushed him studio side years ago.

Nick’s association with a rabid Sunday morning talkback show isn’t helpful.

@Tom_TV7 don’t forget we have Australian Open Tennis coverage for two weeks soon so no daytime bulletins during that time. Also other Tennis tournaments leading up to the Australian Open starting from Monday.ln Melbourne next week we only have Morning News with Tennis in the afternoon, not sure about other states.
I personally prefer watching Ange reading news than Chris.

I know some people have mentioned it a long time before and I am probably in the minority here, but who here on Mediaspy actually believes that Chris Bath should’ve never been shafted down to weekends in 2014 (Ferguson promoted at the same time, which means that @antonio1987 is definitely going to come to the attack front on this topic)?

Like 80-90% of us. Unlike Fergo, she isn’t a robot and she showed her human side a lot more than he has.

I agree with you 100%

I agree with you (long post coming). Looking at Seven News’ ratings over the past two years, the numbers have fallen short of average after Ferguson was appointed the main anchor, and have gained some grounds this year. However, as many have pointed out, The Chase as well as Nine’s automation fiascos are the main factors.

Unfortunately, only Ferguson has proven his runs at Seven News after winning a number of weeks, for Mel Doyle and now Michael Usher, the ratings haven’t proven to be positive and have proved to be quite the opposite (Nine did have major sports coverage over the past week, but still…).

About Chris Bath, Seven started losing grounds in 2011 after their relaunch simply because they messed up their relaunch. Bath wasn’t the problem and Seven axing her was the biggest mistake they’ve ever made, as she was their best newsreader and the only newsreader who’s good enough to go against Pete Overton (like how Roger Climpson was Seven’s best reader against Hendo during the 70s and the early 90s).

Personally, this would be my dream team on Seven News Sydney if I was to choose the news readers:

Chris Bath (News)

Cameron Williams (Should’ve poached him when he was off contract, maybe Nine would have a hard time choosing Kenny’s successor) (Sports)

David Brown (Weather)

Now that Bath will be working on ABC radio from next year, unless Seven is able to poach her back to the network’s weeknight presenter, Seven news Sydney is probably going to continue its struggles next year presenter-wise.

I completely agree that Chris Bath never should’ve been demoted. Infact, I also think that Mel Doyle shouldn’t have been taken off Seven News Sydney.

As I’ve said before, Mark Ferguson would be better presenting daytime bulletins or even on a rolling news channel. From what I’ve seen of him on Seven News Sydney, Fergo’s presenting style is rather rigid, he doesn’t seem as connected with the stories he’s reading compared to other newsreaders and as for his bantering…well, let’s not go there!

Let’s face it. Mark Ferguson isn’t going anywhere, anytime soon. For the past 2.5 years we have been saying that he should be gone in 6, 12 months but he is still here. And if anything, his job is probably more secure than ever with the ratings trend this year, despite the contributing factors.

On paper, Mark is qualified and experienced, even at anchoring a bulletin. He presented Nine’s Early, Morning and Afternoon News at different times and was both the main and secondary news anchor for the 6pm News at a point. So you can understand why Seven hired him, despite him being not popular. But in reality, Mark is not a good anchor and Seven should not have dumped Chris Bath for Mark in hindsight. I agree with @SydneyCityTV that Mark would be better on the Afternoon News or IMO the host of Sunday Night, if he has to be in-studio.

That is actually the exact reason why I don’t understand why Seven hired him. He has never resonated with audiences which was why he was shafted from the main bulletin at Nine. The narrowing of the gap has more to do with Nine’s ratings plummeting than Seven’s improving.

Yes, I agree. From memory, Fergo moved over to Seven because Nine demoted him to weekends and also because of the “THISafternoon” debacle. If you remember that show, you’ll probably also remember why it didn’t last long!

The narrowing of the ratings gap has more to do with Nine’s ratings declining (partly due to Hot Seat, automation woes and the 60 Minutes fiasco) rather than Seven’s improving throughout 2016.
