Days like these I miss real news presenters like David Johnston. He anchored breaking news coverage of the Jakarta bombing in 2004. Now we are subjected to the likes of Jacqui Felgate who is hopeless. She could be reading the most serious story in the world, but still has the same tone of that applied to a fluff piece. It is so frustrating.
Considering that thereâs several major stories dominating the news today, I wonder if Seven will hit the âMark Alertâ button and get their main Sydney newsreader off holidays and presenting tonightâs 6pm bulletin?
Personally, I really hope they donât. Seven really need to support their weekend/fill-in presenters. But of course, it wouldnât surprise meâŚ
The bomb blasts in Jakarta was reduced to a 15 second brief on Melbourneâs 4pm bulletin. Hardly good enough.
If the Opera House stuff had turned into anything then they might but itâs now just another âpolice responded to a threat on social mediaâ story which is hardly major in this day and age.
Jakarta is no bigger a story than the attack in Istanbul earlier in the week. Itâs geographically closer to us but no Aussies involved at this stage so it probably wonât even warrant a full story until more details are available.
Peter Mitchell will return to Seven News Melbourne on Monday night, if this promo posted to Twitter (which I presume is also airing on Seven Melbourne) is anything to go by: https://amp.twimg.com/v/45e31f1b-0247-42ec-8442-297e81ec7e5a
No word yet on when Mark Ferguson will return to Seven News Sydney, however it is worth remembering that both Mark Ferguson and Peter Mitchell returned for 2015 in their respective markets on the same day last year so that will probably be the case again.
Peter Mitchell normally always returns from holidays when Australian Open Tennis starts.
Weather presenter Jane Bunn will also return because she works on Australian Open Tennis coverage.
Peter Mitchell should of returned 2 weeks ago when Peter Hitchener returned.
@Haydos But Peter Hitchener started his holidays at the start of December and Mitch started his holidays later than him.
In regards to Ben Lewis, wonât he be utilised in the same way Emma Dallimore is in the US Bureau?
Sheâs a fill-in âUS reporterâ & couldnât they still use Ben as a fill-in âEurope Reporterâ?
Particularly during holiday periods, quiet times, etc?
- during major events, all hands on deck?
@LukeMovieMan good point Ben would probably be used if someone is on holidays or if a major story develops overseas.
If Emma Dallimore and Ben Lewis are included, wouldnât this make the Seven Networkâs Foreign Correspondent team, indeed the largest?
Seeing as Nine, I donât belive, have as many.
Tenâs is now non-existant.
With Cath Turner heading overseas (which I think will make better use of her talent/experience than suburban runs around Sydney), will this open up a gap for Sevenâs reporting team in Sydney? Especially when you consider that Amanda Abate moved back up North at the end of last year, Seven Sydney might need a new reporter or two sometime soon.
I wouldâve thought that ABC News has the largest foreign correspondent team of any Australian TV network (or media outlet generally) by far.
On a regular basis, I believe that Nineâs main reporters at the overseas bureaus are currently Tom Steinfort in London and Robert Penfold in Los Angeles. Not sure if thereâs any others.
Iâd imagine that both major commercial networks would typically use different reporters (often freelance reporters) overseas for major stories or when the main reporters are on holidays or unavailable.
Amelia Ballinger in Europe, Laura Turner in the US as well.
It occurred to me yesterday that Ben might have taken a permanent position or decided to move home or whatever which would effectively make Cath his replacement.

They added a couple of new reporters late last year (Leonie Ryan and Peter Fegan) plus Jodie Speers might be back a couple of days a week this year as well so I donât think there will be an immediate shortage.
What they really need is to poach a senior reporter from somewhere, especially with Chris Reason doing a lot less in the field over the last six months.
Sorry, I was meaning the three commercial networks (Seven, Nine & Ten) foreign correspondents.
Seven also has Craig Leeson in Hong Kong which nudges them ahead of Nine though thereâs not much difference really.
I have to agree, but where would Seven News Sydney find one? About the only major name that comes to mind (that isnât already tied up with Nine or Ten, of course) is maybe ex-Nine Sydney state political reporter Kevin Wilde. Apart from that, Seven would probably have to go to the radio newsrooms or regional networks.
I seriously canât see Seven forking out the cash that would be required to get any of Nine Sydneyâs current senior reporters to âMake The Switchâ but then again, far stranger things have happened before.
Rebecca Maddern presenting in Melbourne this weekend.
from what I read somewhere a few months ago they tried to do a âpackage dealâ and get Damian Ryan and Mark Burrows, plus someone else from Nine, but they all declined.
David Brown is doing our weather in Sydney this evening. Must be the first time a bloke has done it in over a decade.
