Although they should get rid of that tacky “Sydney Comfort Index” feature.
Judging by the video, surely “more forecasts for more locations across Sydney, the Central Coast and the Blue Mountains” is a decent enough promotional point of difference to the weather forecasts on the other channels? In my opinion at least, it’s more useful information anyway…
*Uses a liveshot for the local 4pm news, unlike Nine. That’s about it really.
Cons:
*Limited opportunities for standing/alternative/special presentation angles.
*6pm liveshot is almost identical to the one used by Nine.
*Aside from OTS graphics for Sport, the vertical screens to the side of the set are rarely used for anything other than burning backdrops in.
*Still mostly reliant on chroma-key weather presentation (the last news service in the market to do so on a regular basis), because they don’t have a large enough screen to present the forecast from.
Nine News Sydney/national set.
Pros:
*Uses a wider screen for the main backdrop.
*Backdrops for Sport using relevant local stadiums (in all markets, not just Sydney) are a nice touch.
*Is fairly flexible when it comes to standing/alternative/special presentation angles.
Cons:
*Backdrops can get too distracting/busy at times. Sometimes less is more, Nine.
*Uses a fairly ugly static backdrop for the 4pm news. There’s also the minor issue that Sydney sometimes has to nationalise it’s 4pm bulletin to help out other states when they’re thin on resources while the equivalent service on Seven remains local (knowing what the news operations are like generally, you’d think it’d be the other way round!) but that’s another story.
*Here in Sydney, the weather is still using the giant plasma when they’re very lucky to have a great big video wall behind them on the right hand side! If Nine News Sydney utilised the videowall, I think that would make for a presentation of the forecast with considerably more impact. Although to be fair, what TCN do now still makes for better weather presentation than how things are at Martin Place.
Both networks: What’s the point of having screens at the front of/built-into the desk when they’re rarely used for anything more than a titlecard graphic?
Can’t say for sure, but likely refers to the peak afternoon temperature, even if it rises after 6pm with remaining sun or other atmospheric factors. Sorta like how rainfall is calculated from 9am.
In the US, forecasters might make pains to point out such discrepancies by noting afternoon temps or the occasional “midnight max” as a cold front comes in.
