Sydney’s Olympic Challenge competition:
For anyone interested I just uploaded some Seven News openers (audio only) from TVW and national bulletins from ATN in December 2001 and January 2002 with a focus on the bushfires in NSW at the time.
VOs from Paula Voce and Howard Gretton in Perth, as well as Natalie Barr, Georgie Gardner, Mark Beretta and Anne Fulwood in Sydney.
For Sunrise, funny that they suddenly started getting Beretts to co-read the headlines.
He was the co-anchor at the time, so usually would. Not sure why he’s not in some of those clips, perhaps was on an OB for the fires.
Any plans to put the video up?
I wish. Unfortunately I only have audio from back then so that is all I have for this.
Fun fact:
This Saturday (October 5 of 2024), will mark 9,000 days since Seven last used the Seven Nightly News Branding for it’s National and State news bulletins. The current plain Seven News brand was relaunched on February 14 of 2000.
Bill McDonald became a free agent after he was sacked by Ten Brisbane at the end of 2012 (though IIRC, Georgina Lewis was originally going to be let go, only to be retained), and Seven pounced on his services, pairing him with Sharyn Ghidella to refresh its weeknight 6:00pm bulletin, which as we all know backfired in the long term.
What they should’ve done was pair McDonald with Ghidella on weekends, and kept Kay and Rod on weeknights. But that would’ve meant a demotion of sorts for McDonald, who had been presenting Ten’s weeknight bulletin between 2004-12, and also read the sport for a while before that (during which Geoff Mullins was the chief male newsreader).
(off-topic) Similarly, when Andrew Lofthouse joined Nine in late-2008, he was initially paired with Eva Milic on weekends, only to be promoted to weeknights only six months later when Bruce Paige stepped down.
100% agree.
On another note, if it’s true that 10 were originally going to let Georgie go at that time, why did they backflip?

But that would’ve meant a demotion of sorts for McDonald, who had been presenting Ten’s weeknight bulletin between 2004-12,
wouldn’t be a demotion if he’d gone from no job (after being sacked at 10) to a weekend anchor job (at 7).
In actual fact they just didnt need him at all. Should have left Kay & Rod to make it through to retirement and then promote Sharyn to weeknights by 2020 when Kay retired.
I remember watching this special. It was really good. It includes Seven’s virtual take on the twisted metal set, which wasn’t bad for 2011
Perth had the twisted metal set until they left the Dianella studios. Best 7 news set used
