At the time this switcheroo happened (2006-7), Seven News was coming second to (National) Nine News in the Brisbane ratings, though this wasn’t the only major change to their lineup. With Webcke presenting the weeknight sport, this would’ve pitted him up against another Queensland Origin legend in Wally Lewis, though the latter would take some time off after a diagnosis of epilepsy towards the end of 2006.

John Schluter was lured across from Nine after he suddenly resigned as their weather presenter close to the end of 2006, with Talitha Cummins moving to weekends, while Sharyn Ghidella (then the Today newsreader on Channel Nine) was hired to present on weekends, replacing Tracey Challenor, who then left the network. Ghidella therefore followed in the footsteps of Ian Ross, who of course would take the Sydney bulletin to the top of their ratings charts in 2005.

By the end of 2007, Seven News would become the top-rating news service in south-east Queensland, which they would hold to the end of 2012.

This is what they should’ve done in the first place IMO. Then after a few years, slowly transition them into weeknights. Instead, BTQ shot themselves in the foot when Bill and Sharyn suddenly replaced Kay and Rod at very short notice, and this allowed QTQ to reclaim ratings supremacy in Brisbane.

With today being 10 years since BTQ introduced a one hour bulletin. Here is the previous time it was tried in April 1987. Included very unusual news graphics. Also introduced Terry Willesee Tonight to Brisbane.

That has to be one of the strangest openers ever and they probably paid a small mint for it. The last of the overly long openers too. Probably their worst year in living history along with HSV. BTQ lost many of the regionals that year too who can take a feed via satellite to any network rather than the outdated one and only microwave bearer. QTQ shot to the top overnight which stayed in that position for many years.

Parts of the graphics and the set have a very American local news feel–even more so than is usually the case in Australia–but the circular theme of the intro sequence reminds me of this open from HTV in Wales:

I loved the theme music though.
Other openers that went with it were great.

The 1986 version was the best. I’ve yet to see openers fron 84 or 85.

That part was never seen as it was used for the headline bed. This vision was recorded off the master.

The ticker format/graphics looked different on the Morning News (produced from Sydney) and Afternoon News (which came out of Melbourne), wherein the letters were too close to each other on the latter bulletin. I know that Seven Melbourne had just moved into the Docklands studio only a year earlier (2002) which also saw their news graphics change to match those seen around the rest of the country.
