Does anybody know if 7 gets separate ratings figures for 7 and 7HD? Maybe if the up-take is good enough they might consider leaving it after the games.
If the ratings are reported as a combined 7 + 70 (as expected), then there is no separate figure available to anyone.

Maybe Seven would prefer to keep their main channel SD until they can fully cater for their news bulletins as HD in all markets?

Seven are using the “Live & Free HD” watermark on 7mate’s Olympics coverage in NQ tonight.

So I guess that means they’ll never have their main channel in HD because Seven will always want to have the AFL in HD in all states.
And as we’ve said before, ludicrous when all of the FOX produced games for Swans/Giants, Lions/Suns and Eagles/Dockers in Syd/Bris/Perth respectively are upscaled.

So then how are they getting away with having AFL in SD nationally for the next fortnight?
AFL is clearly the issue but I’m not convinced that it’s a contractual thing.
I’m quietly hopeful that Seven just might surprise everyone by actually keeping the HD simulcast of the main channel running in all metro markets post-Olympics, but of course I’m certainly not holding my breath for that! If Seven actually go back to broadcasting 7mateHD in all metro markets except Melbourne and Adelaide post-Olympics, then I definitely hope there’s plenty of “Australia’s #1 channel available in HD…but only in two cities” complaints online and from other media outlets.
Failing that, one would dearly like to hope that Seven plan to switch their HD channel to the main one in Sydney, Brisbane/Gold Coast and Perth for other premium main channel events people have a reasonable expectation to see in HD such as the Spring Racing Carnival and the Summer of Tennis. Unlike the Rio Olympics, switching to the main channel for those events shouldn’t be a big deal when they’re held during the AFL off-season…

They may have got permission or agreement from the AFL to exclude HD for those two weeks on account of the Olympics. I think even the AFL would have to accept that the Olympics outranks it in terms of national interest.
As far as I know, it is only tonight that the AFL is on 7Mate in Melbourne and Adelaide. The other Saturdays it is on the main channel with Olympics on 7Mate.
Be interesting to see what happens in regional Qld or doesn’t after the AFL with HD.
Agree with you on that. No one has produced any evidence there’s any contractual obligation to carry AFL in HD.
The Fox Footy games here in Perth is in HD… cmon Seven, just leave the main channel as HD, I rather a local game in HD than 2 interstate teams on a friday night.

I sent an eMail to AFL House last week. They confirmed they have been in frequent negotions with Ch 7 around the Olympics.
Yes, if the AFL said “no”, there wouldn’t have been HD in Syd/Bris for Olympics

None of which answers why Seven have a full time 7mate simulcast because of a few matches a week of football, half of which are in SD from Fox Sports.
Even SBS figured this out with the A-league on SBS2.
