Seven HD

So in regional Qld do I switch on 7Mate to see the opening ceremony in HD or a SD version on 7 ? I mean unless there is a further announcement I’m assuming 7Mate will be the opening ceremony to give it to us in HD … surely they aren’t just going to give capital cities HD . As was said earlier on here it seems doubtful that Seven would bring the main channel to HD for regional Qld for 2 weeks …unless it just appears when Brisbane’s does next week…with no announcement…

I dunno why Seven has left it so long to announce HD plans for the Olympics for the capital cities (why not a few weeks earlier for people who wanted to know)… it’s like it isn’t important to them.

I don’t think Seven care about anyone or anything.

They’ve got way too much $$$$$$… Massive ratings & so much to fall back on.

Much of their stragety is just passive these days.

Because over the past decade, they’ve been able to work out an annual plan, which no other network can match.

My Kitchen Rules (etc.) for the ratings/bragging rights…

AFL Grand Final, Australian Open & Melb Cup (etc.) for the big advertising dollars & promos.

And look what all that gives them every year  If only Ch 9, Ch 10, the ABC & SBS could do the same eh?

MKR was just a show developed after seeing the success of Masterchef on Ten. I feel like only Ten is the network bold enough to come up with new fresh ideas for tv shows rather than copy each other like 7 and 9 do . Or 7 copying ideas from Ten .

After the Olympics and after all these LOL specials we have had lately will viewers stay with Ten after it’s recent successes or flock back to 7 ?

7 will switch on 7HD as the main channel during big events

Is that fact or your guess though?

I agree about MasterChef & other juggernaut shows over the years.

But Ch 7 & Ch 10 always had a good working relationship, more so when they both aired the AFL (2007-2011).

Both networks seem to have lost/picked-up on-air telent/journalists between each other too in recent years (way too many to mention).

Yet Ch 10 like to follow Ch 7’s strategy, Bev McGarvey is quoted as saying in a video (e.g.) “Live & Free” during Sport, etc.

I think because Ch 9 hasn’t had the AFL since 2006 & no reality cooking show either, their approach has been different in programming & strategy to the other two.

@LukeMovieMan, Seven haven’t got everything going their own way. 6pm news ratings and breakfast TV ratings have been quite competitive in recent years, particularly in the major East Coast markets.

I would argue that most (not all) of Ten’s “original” ideas are generally just local versions of formats which originated overseas. But that’s a debate for another topic.

Olympics aside, source?

Seven will switch the main channel as the HD channel during big events such as the Olympics and AFL Grand Final

that article doesn’t say anything about it or let alone AFL GF

The article says:

So it’s not just for the Olympics.

Realisitically, deals and obligations aside, I agree that 7 should be showing the AFL in HD.
But the way to do it is via breakaway programming on the HD channel, not by simulcasting 7mate for the 156 hours per week that don’t feature AFL.

If they ran a full 7 simulcast, continued to air the AFL on 7mate and as a breakaway on the 7HD channel, then a “Border Security” or “The Goldbergs” filler on 7HD to get it back in line with the main channel schedule, that would work perfectly fine in my opinion.

It’s not like they haven’t done 7HD breakaway programming before…

…and for the 20 or so weeks a year that the AFL isn’t on! In any case, I completely agree with that post.

In theory this wouldn’t be so much of a problem if Seven used their main channel to air AFL matches in all markets (same deal with Nine and NRL, of course) or if we had two or more HD channels, but of course neither can happen for various reasons so I guess there’s no use continuously complaining about it. Although I still won’t be any less irritated if/when Seven is eventually the only FTA network without a full-time HD simulcast of it’s main channel here in Sydney though!

Ironically before the new set-up the AFL was already shown in HD in Sydney and Brisbane

The reason for having the current split HD service is to show the AFL in HD in Sydney and Brisbane.

Yet as discussed above the AFL match shown on 7HD tonight in Brisbane is not in HD. Makes you wonder how that fulfils any contractual obligations.

What is it in then… 576 i upscaled ?

Almost certainly a 576i feed upconverted to 1080i IMO.

If I’m not mistaken, Seven only airs AFL matches from Fox Footy in SD because Seven are only provided with a SD feed from Fox Footy. Of course, Fox Footy AFL matches can certainly be seen in HD on Foxtel. Make of all that what you will.

And the HD watermark :imp:

They didn’t do that before. Back when it was “LIVE AND FREE HD” they made sure to remove the HD part for Fox simulcasts.

Here’s an idea out of field regarding the 7HD debacle for Syd/Bris/Perth.

So it appears that 7 is required to show the AFL live and in HD nationally.

But does the “Live” and “HD” HAVE to be at the same time ie. why not show it live in SD on 7mate and satisfy the HD component by airing a replay at 12am on the main channel for Syd/Bris/Perth (which would obviously have a HD simulcast)?

I know that a number of people have said that but I don’t agree that it is the case. For example the AFL will not be show in HD for the duration of the Olympics. If it was a contractual obligation to show the AFL in HD, the Olympics would have been shown on just 7Two and 7Mate with the AFL on 7/7HD.

The only reason I can think of for having the Sydney, Brisbane, Perth 7HD situation is to avoid viewer confusion. Seven, possibly think that viewers won’t be able to work out what is going on if they use HD breakawys in these markets. For example, if someone gets used to watching all their 7 programs on LCN 70 and on a Friday or Saturday, they turn to that channel and there is AFL, enough people to make a ratings difference may not realise they cans witch to LCN 7 and instead they switch to another network. Or they watch the 7 news on 70 and to continue watching have to switch to 7 - enough might just as easily switch to 9 or 10 to make a difference in the ratings.

I agree. Nobody has found it stated that Seven has an obligation to show AFL in HD. And, as you say TV Cynic, while the Olympics are on it won’t be in HD in three cities.

So let’s just make (primary) 7HD permanent in SYD/BNE/PER. After all Stokes himself only promised AFL in HD from 2017 onwards.
