Seven HD

NB: In Perth, this is often for the Friday night game only, most Sat & Sun games get shown on LCN7 in unless it interferes with the news. So this two teared system is often just for one HD game a week :frowning:

And Prime and maybe SCA and WIN and GTS/BKN and SC10.

Funny how it’s taken until now for this vital piece of information to be known.

Why can’t they flick the switch during AFL and flick it back at all other times? The whole thing is a mess.

If Seven were willing to take a punt, continue with 7HD and convert 7mate into an MPEG4 HD stream.
If it looks like ratings weren’t affected, then other networks might follow

Still waiting in Brisbane for EPG update, still showing 7Mate simulcast.

Why am I not surprised that Seven will only simulcast the main channel during the Olympics before going back to 7mateHD for Sydney, Brisbane/Gold Coast and Perth?

Is there any reason (technical or otherwise) that Seven can’t run the main channel in HD most of the time but with breakaway programing from 7mate for AFL matches? It’s not as if what Seven show on the main channel in lieu of AFL here in Sydney is particularly riveting most of the time, so they may as well run Channel 70 as a full simulcast of Seven most of the time but with some AFL coverage from 7mate in HD if possible!

They better be simulcasting the main channel in all markets during the AFL off-season, otherwise we’re going to see the exact same complaints when it’s revealed that only some markets will be able to see the Spring Racing Carnival and the Summer of Tennis in HD!

Doubt any multichannel will switch to broadcasting in MPEG4 for a while after the 7flix ‘experiment’

It’s not so simple as saying Seven are “such morons” when a) it’s probably a contractual obligation, b) the aforementioned obligation is for their ‘flagship’ sports property and c) it can be argued (putting aside the execution of it) that they’re doing the right thing by ensuring the AFL can be seen in HD

It’s good that the closing ceremony will be simulcast on Seven, 7TWO and 7mate according to Olympic Schedule thread, otherwise viewers in Sydney, Brisbane and Perth will miss out on seeing the event in HD.

They could do what SBS2 used to do with A League by keeping the main SBS channel in HD during the week but switch the HD channel to SBS2 on the weekend so the League coverage was on in HD.

I think 9Life is MPEG-4 in regional Qld.

Has 7 outlined at all before, if it plans to air HD on the main channel after AFL is over for the season?

You have to remember as well that 7flix was a new channel as well, so naturally it will take a while for viewers to find the offerings by the channel. But yes, I can see your point as well :stuck_out_tongue:
But we can’t be stuck on MPEG2 forever. We are already much behind the UK for example.

And New Zealand. Parents went to a holiday in NZ 3 years ago and commented how good the tv channels looked in HD there.

In hindsight, we would probably be in a better situation with HD now if the regulators initially decided to allow networks to do proper SD multichanneling first and HD later on rather than mostly the other way round, due to the ridiculously stringent multichannel regulations (which have since been scrapped, thankfully) that were put in place from the start of Digital TV in Australia.

Apparently every channel in the UK is in HD, even multichannels. They’re living the dream Lol

Just in case nobody uploaded it, here’s what the 7HD Sport (delayed telecast) watermark looks like.

[LCN 70 Melbourne]

NB/
And yes… The AFL still makes Ch 7 delay the Saturday Arvo Football in Melbourne… Thinking more people will ‘turn up’ at the MCG, etc. (Ch 10 use to do the same) :expressionless:

Even more ridiculous when you consider that the Sydney 7mateHD broadcasts of Swans/Giants games that are produced by FOX are not native HD anyway (upscaled only). I daresay it’s the same for Bris re Lions/Suns and Perth with Eagles/Dockers games from FOX.

In Ch 7 & the AFL’ eyes…

25k to 40k watching AFL on 7Mate in Syd/Bris is good enough for them.

Which is much higher that what sports get on a multi-channel in one market anyway.

We have to remember how expensive the AFL rights are (2017-2022)

2 words TV deal. That is what Channel 7 signed up for. If Seven wanted to show it live then they should’ve made a better TV deal by bringing in more dollars at the negotiating table.

If the AFL on 7mate rated 75-100k+ in Sydney and Brisbane, you could probably justify a HD broadcast. But is it really worth running a HD simulcast of 7mate instead of the main channel in Sydney & Brisbane for the pleasure of approximately 50k or less viewers who watch the AFL in Sydney & Brisbane? Personally I wouldn’t have thought so, especially when you consider that 7mateHD is an MPEG4 channel and therefore not available on many TVs!

Even though I don’t watch that much on Seven, personally I would prefer a full time simulcast of the main channel in HD rather than 7mate. Failing that, I would be content with breakaway programing for 7mate coverage of AFL (even if they ran 7mateHD on weekends and 7HD during the week, similar to what SBS used to do for HD coverage of SBS2 A League soccer matches a few years ago) and normal main channel programing for the rest of the time. Is that really too much to ask for?!
