It was announced last year that Hamish would replace Bruce on Sunday’s.
The only exception to this is if the Sunday game is interstate as Hamish has Game Day based in Melbourne.
Friday Night Football delivers a highly anticipated clash pitting the Crows and their star-studded forward line against the might of the reigning premier Hawthorn.
In the pre-game, we honour four-time premiership star Shaun Burgoyne as he celebrates his 300th game. We caught up with his family and premiership teammates at Hawthorn and Port Adelaide to tell us what they love about Shaun. AFL superstars Buddy Franklin, Nate Fyfe and Patrick Dangerfield also pay tribute to the indigenous champion.
Sunday Night Football returns for the ANZAC Day Eve Melbourne v Richmond match. The Demons have shown some good form recently, while Richmond hope to welcome back key stars to help rise from their slump. At half time we feature the inspirational story of returned soldier Curtis McGrath who lost both his legs in Afghanistan and is now on track for the Paralympics.
Saturday Night Footy sees the Cats trek to the Adelaide Oval to face the Power. Port Adelaide chairman David Koch and Crows power forward Tex Walker join us live on the desk. BT takes us through what happens when an AFL player undergoes a concussion test. And Discovered catches up with new Cats ruckman Zac Smith.
The traditional ANZAC Day clash takes on added intrigue this year as the embattled Bombers have surprised many with some strong performances, while the Magpies form has been at the wrong end of the scale. Neil Kearney tells the story of WWI military commander Sir John Monash, along with Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson’s respect for Monash’s achievements.
Equally strange the Anzac Day clash is relegated to multichannel in Sydney and Brisbane, where it belongs. Previously this game always got main channel treatment for some reason.
Considering both Eagles and Dockers games were Fox produced I don’t think it’s that surprising given one of those would obviously replace the Sunday Night game.
Hamish apologised on behalf of Seven just after 10.30pm saying the edited package was not up to standards and vowed it would not happen again.
To cut short The Last Post to fit the ads is unacceptable.
Seven should have cut the news to 30mins and begin coverage at 6:30pm eastern so that the full pre-game ANZAC ceremony could have been shown. Instead they tried to condense it into a package in the 10min pre-game which was never going to work. Cutting off The Last Post for an ad-break was the worst example of it
Here’s Anzac Day clash ratings from 7 years ago (Zaharakis’ famous match winning goal):
4 Anzac Day AFL Ten 1,113,000 74,000 664,000 72,000 145,000 158,000
Been in pretty big decline since?
WA didn’t get the Sunday night match on Ch 7, due to quota (i.e.) You already had Fremantle V Carlton via Fox Footy simulcast. Same with Sydney (i.e.) St Kilda V GWS earlier in the day.
I had never realised Seven continued the FTA trend, of having Anzac Day on main channel in Sydney/Bris? Wonder if it was a good decision to move?
Has to be said though, the day there’s a highly anticipated game & a thriller… Could come back to be a bad decision.
I meant I had never realised prior to this year, that the Anzac Day AFL clash at the MCG was on the main channel in Sydney and Brisbane (at least btw 2002 - 2006 on Ch 9, 2007 - 2009, 2011 on Ch 10 & 2010, 2012 - present Ch 7).
Oh I see. I don’t see why having it on a multichannel would affect the ratings. Everyone has access to 7mate or 7two (whatever channel it was on) so those that would watch it would watch it. Its actually handy for the network to know how many are ‘actually’ watching it and not just leaving their tv on.
