Seven AFL Coverage

The wording of it is IMO, can see how it would create confusion about this sub brand when it’s really just about them having the streaming rights to sports they probably should have always had.

And have to put up with 30 seconds of ad drivel!

I have always appreciated lots of your posts in the past but this reply is just a bit much. Why suggest something I have never said or posted? I NEVER suggested those who don’t have Fox Sports/Kayo be made to get it for the AFL Grand Final, it was the opposite as I and others complained that we watched all games, all season. on Kayo but are forced to watch Seven’s ad filled garbage on Grand final day! As a pensioner (who watches my team on Kayo as I cannot get to games anymore) it would be nice to be paid by Fox even if I hate their owners as much as I hate 7(and 9) owners. :slightly_smiling_face: So I have never suggested Kayo/Fox have the Grand Final exclusively, just let it also be screened where it’s treated with respect and not spoiled by countless ad breaks! Was a pleasure (except for the result) to watch the Australia Cup Final on 10Bold ad free.

That’s a matter of opinion.

This is exactly how I feel it should be.

According to TV Blackbox, Gerard Whateley is rumoured to join Seven to host the Monday night panel show (featuring Caroline Wilson, Kane Cornes and Nick Riewoldt), and also to commentate Thursday games with Alister Nicholson.

Maybe this is where Seven and Hamish McLachlan depart ways, Whateley to take over Brownlow hosting and other Bruce-Hamish-esque professional duties? But if falls through, again, maybe Hamish stays?

Could just put Hamish on Sunday’s or Friday’s to see out his contract.

Either way, all of these changes and rumours about the AFL media landscape for 2025 and beyond is more exciting than the Grand Final on the weekend (at least for us media enthusiasts).

Looks like 7 News budget cuts have gone to 7 Sport.

Could only find a low res promo.

And the inevitable backlash.

Latest from News Corp summing the AFL media shake-up so far (also crediting themselves at the end of the article instead of @KevinPerry for the Gerard Whateley scoop):

Well, got to recoup that 7 year, $4.5b record broadcast fee somehow…

If they do get Whateley for Thursday nights then Hamish could do Sunday with Bennett. And who knows maybe 7 swaps the Sunday VFL to Saturday (so Bennett isn’t doing double) & also if they are going to have a Sunday morning show too.

Maybe they are going to finally listen to the fan feedback and stop pairing BT & Brayshaw & have a full commentary pairing overhaul etc.

They are making big moves so anything is possible

The only way I see Jason Bennett doing Sundays is if he’s paired with Hamish (or just anyone other than BT). I can’t see him and Brian doing it together all year given they reportedly don’t get along.

I’d be shocked if BT didn’t do Sundays given the ‘chief’ caller typically calls 2 matches per round. With all the money Seven are spending I wouldn’t be surprised if they take the cheaper option and have Brian joined by Alister or Gerard each Sunday on a rotational basis.

They can easily make do with 4 callers (BT, JB, Al and Gerard). 6 is too many for the number of games they broadcast.

Interesting that Lethal is apparently moving back to Seven. Thought he might be giving up media altogether when it was announced he was leaving Nine.

It seems bizarre to me, Leigh bothered defecting to Nine, yet finds himself back at Seven only a year later. He’d have left for a good reason, but also come back for a good reason. Purely $$$$$$$?

With how much money they spend then 4 callers would be the cheap way. I think 5 would be ideal so it’s not the same 4 calling 3-4 games a round since it would be the same voices etc

If they get Whateley for AFL, maybe they can keep him for Cricket too - a successor for Tim Lane :man_shrugging:

I always just assumed he went to Nine coz his job at Seven was pretty minimal and he could do Footy Furnace from Brisbane.

Maybe Seven have a more suitable role for him now with all the changes happening? Or maybe the mail is just wrong and he is walking away completely.

I think 4 main callers with the VFL/AFLW main commentator in Bennett able to come in when required is more than enough. I’d have him as the chief caller in the AFL and think his talent isn’t used properly atm but that’s just me.

Thursday footy replaces 7’s Saturday night footy coverage for the first few weeks of the season

I agree, I think he is 7’s best. If they add Whateley then he would be their 2nd best but he is treated as their last, why else did they make him call Sunday VFL + AFL when they could of given Hamish the Sunday slot in 2023. This year they did give him Saturday but still sometimes make him call the Sunday double. And he also didn’t call finals after week 1, Alister Nicholson took his Saturday slots.

I could see him leaving 7 if Fox gives him a bigger calling role, especially if Whateley leaves Fox for 7

Unfortunately seems as though Whateley is staying at Fox.

He would’ve been fantastic for footy, cricket and panel shows on Seven. Perhaps a conversation for two years from now when his contract at Fox reportedly finishes.

Well that’s a no brainer. But some people have money and that’s who that $50 price tag would be targeting. People would pay it. Probably not many in here but that’s not who they are targeting for that.
