Did you experience this for yourself?
I watched the whole game on 7Plus and what you are explaining did not happen once to me.

I’m led to believe this isn’t true - Fox have offered additional money and have been told that the game will remain FTA exclusive
Yes I did - it might just be something to do with the individual local feeds.
You don’t see the Super Bowl being simulcast on Amazon or ESPN. It’s free to air exclusively over there rotated between the broadcast networks rights holders.
The AFL and NRL grand final should always be exclusively free to air.
I can’t stand these simulcast deals we have in this country. It drives me crazy.
Considering they had to show 7’s ads and watermark on it, not sure they really had that much benefit from simulcasting it. Outside of that Arena fashion coverage link they tried once.
This is true. They have exclusive streaming only matches or playoffs but the superbowl is FTA.
Do they show it on that networks streaming tho? Like if it’s on NBC then they would show it on Peacock, CBS on paramount+, ABC on ESPN etc?
During the current NFL rights cycle (noting that the NFL has the ability to opt-out of the various agreements after the 2029 (or in the case of Disney’s deal) 2030 season), ESPN and ABC will show the Super Bowl in 2027 and 2031.
ABC (Disney) own ESPN so that make sense and so it is like what I was saying here
I think paid ad free streaming from the broadcaster it self is different to a simulcast on another broadcaster.
Yes within the same ecosystem it’s fine as the revenue goes to all the same place.
The last Super Bowl was also simulcast on Nickelodeon.
Spanish coverage of the CBS Super Bowls has gone to the ESPN Deportes cable channel in the past but the last one went to Univision (Spanish FTA network, not owned by Paramount). Fox has their own Spanish-language cable channel Fox Deportes and NBC used Telemundo (FTA) or Universo (cable) both owned by Comcast.
I’m not sure whether this is still a thing or not but wasn’t there a rule that prevented certain events i.e. the AFL and NRL GF from being shown on pay tv?
Collingwood player Sarah Rowe made her commentary debut for Seven’s coverage of North Melbourne v Richmond this afternoon.
It was just a discussion during the week. Some would pay it. It wouldn’t be many but even if it was 10,000. 7 make half a million. I would be 50/50. I cannot stand ads. It’s a reason I don’t watch a lot of FTA.

The AFL Grand Final and the Charles Brownlow Medal five days earlier heralded the arrival of 7plus Sport, the live and free home of the best sport in Australia.
The launch of 7plus Sport means every Australian can now live stream for free AFL matches and the best international and domestic cricket on home soil, including the upcoming Test summer between Australia and India, BBL, WBBL, the Women’s International Series and the Women’s Ashes series.
Adding AFL and cricket to Seven’s already extensive digital sport offering – which includes horse racing, boxing, Supercars, AFLW, LIV Golf, cycling, hockey, athletics, netball and much more – means Australians can now be able to watch every Seven sport, live and free on any device from anywhere in Australia at any time.
Seven Network Director of Sport, Chris Jones, said: “Following one of the most unpredictable AFL seasons in recent memory, what a fitting finale it was. Chris Fagan, who is one of the best people in the industry, has overcome so much through his entire career and has now led his Lions to premiership glory.
“Congratulations to the players and thank you on behalf of our production team to everyone within the AFL who allowed us to tell their stories.
“As we finish the 2024 season, we have our sights set firmly on a bigger and better 2025 AFL Premiership Season with more programming and analysis than ever before. And like Saturday’s Grand Final, every game we cover live will be streamed for free on 7plus Sport. It’s going to be massive,” he said.
Gereurd Roberts, Group Managing Director, Seven Digital, said: “The record-breaking number of people who watched the AFL Grand Final on 7plus Sport clearly demonstrates how the addition of AFL and cricket to 7plus will forever change the way Australians watch and engage with sport, and create unprecedented opportunities for our clients and agency partners.
“We’ve always said the arrival of AFL and cricket on 7plus would be a defining moment in the digital streaming revolution, and Saturday’s numbers prove that. With a massive summer of cricket to come, including five Tests between Australia and India, Australians can now watch every Seven sport, live and free on any device from anywhere in the country, at any time. And the weekend’s Grand Final shows just how important that is to them.”
Seven National Television Sales Director, Katie Finney, said: “The AFL once again proved to be the #1 winter sport for audiences and brands. Seven’s AFL coverage reached 6.09 million viewers, offering unparalleled reach and engagement across all demographics and with AFL now streaming live and free on 7plus Sport in 2025, it’s set to grow even further.
“Free live sport is where brands can connect with audiences and cultural moments at scale, and the biggest events this summer are on Seven and 7plus Sport, including the upcoming Bathurst 1000 in two weeks and the Australia vs India Test match starting 22 November.”
Seven’s Head of AFL and Sport Innovation, Gary O’Keeffe, said: “In a fantastic story for football in Australia’s northern states, we are thrilled to have captured every corner of the nation on Australian sport’s biggest day.
“Footy is in our DNA, and Seven’s coverage showcase the entertainment and passion of the AFL competition like no one else. We thank the AFL, its players, Clubs and most importantly the fans whose passion for the game drives everything we do at 7AFL.”

How? It’s never been on Kayo. Deal with it.
More AFLW score graphic glitches. The graphic didn’t expand to show G & B, it just showed the score
How hard is it for JAM TV to get it right?
What I meant was do they show ads after every Try?
After the conversion attempt they do. Sometimes it’s a out of program ad but sometimes they run a split screen ad.
It’s just 7 greed to show it exclusively
omg are you joking
They’ve spoiled The Big Bash too!
That was Fox not Seven.
Considering it’s the biggest game of the year, of course Seven would want exclusivity over it unless there’s a very good reason for them to give that up.
Exactly, unsure how much jag is being paid by Fox to shill some alternate version of reality where we pay to watch the Grand Final.
Everyone knows there’s actually no game play during these ads right? You aren’t missing anything.
I’m pretty sure I’ve read they don’t resume play until the ads are finished. They’re told when to resume.
Exactly, you don’t lose anything but 15 seconds of drivel from Seven’s commentators.
I think a lot would be $50 to watch without ads.
That was suggested by out of touch Cam Mooney.
Nation audience just over 4 million.
Reach or average?
remain FTA exclusive
As it should.
Outside of that Arena fashion coverage link they tried once.
Any clips of this?
Do they show it on that networks streaming tho? Like if it’s on NBC then they would show it on Peacock, CBS on paramount+, ABC on ESPN etc?
Yes, but that’s the same company so doesn’t count.
I’m not sure whether this is still a thing or not but wasn’t there a rule that prevented certain events i.e. the AFL and NRL GF from being shown on pay tv?
Yes the previously mentioned anti-siphoning legislation.
Collingwood player Sarah Rowe made her commentary debut for Seven’s coverage of North Melbourne v Richmond this afternoon.
Confirms they did it from the studio rather than the ground with that image.
She’s been doing AFL Media productions this season, so natural progression really. She’s good at it too.

How can you have a 44% gain on a platform that doesn’t exist? Unless they are actually going to launch a Sport app?
How can you have a 44% gain on a platform that doesn’t exist? Unless they are actually going to launch a Sport app?
They’d be talking about the increase watching on 7plus, now that it can be streamed on all devices and not just limited to connected TV’s.
I think it’s clear that they won’t be launching a seperate app for for sports streaming, it’s just a very clunky way for them to promote free streaming of sports on 7plus now that they can for AFL / Cricket.
How hard is it for JAM TV to get it right?
Especially since they don’t seem to have the same issue for coverage of state league’s (or at least their SANFL coverage).
Is it that clunky? No real different to Stan Sport - it’s not a separate app, but rather an experience within the app (albeit that one is extra money). I think it does the job it needs to - there is Sport on 7plus.
They couldn’t resist, saw earlier Larry and Kylie talk about the ratings on TMS at the top of the show
