Seven AFL Coverage

Is that the show formerly known as Talking Finals?

EDIT: it looks to be a one-off episode.

Promo during the coverage tonight said that Talking Finals starts September 5. Tim Watson, Trent Cotchin and Joel Selwood will host, and Mitch Cleary will also feature.

I’d say it will air right after RFDS in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.

I wonder if Game Day (or a similar show) is a chance to return? Noticeably lacking in a Sunday morning footy or sports show vs Nine’s multiple and ABC’s Offsiders. It was hinted at returning post-COVID and then rumoured last year and again earlier this year before being abandoned. Has to be an obvious for Seven.

Game Day was a success for Seven, lasting 12 years and often No. 1 in its timeslot or at least very competitive with Sunday Footy Show / WWOS > Sports Sunday. It also saw media careers commence (network talent like Hamish McLachlan/numerous current & ex players and sports journalists like News Corp’s Mark Robinson an OG now Chief Writer and AFL Media’s Nat Edwards now at Seven since 2019), showed off a different set at HSV and was a prominent weekly local production for the station, saw interview highlights often used in news bulletin clips on TV and radio and had special editions such as Grand Final day, as well as other unique regular segments.

Doesn’t seem to be on the cards. I would say repeats of The Morning Show might be making Seven more money in that time slot

Stupid timeslot…

It’s right after RFDS in AFL states. Plus you can catch up anytime via 7plus.

Biggest issue is Seven’s reality shows not scheduled to finish until 9:15 each night pushing the rest of the shows late.

The target audience won’t be watching RFDS. There should be a consistent timeslot or the show will fail.

Tuesday night is a good choice, avoiding Footy Classified which is on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Tuesday night is a good slot but 10:15 might be too late. Maybe it can be on 7mate earlier and then gets replayed in the main channel at 10:15 (like they did talking footy)

What was the issue with Mondays 7:30pm? Apart from TF being on a m/c thus limiting exposure and up against (usually) main ch realities.

Clash with AFL360 perhaps? What were the ratings like for each program previously when Talking Footy was last on?

September is for Talking Finals on Seven

Selwood, Cotchin to star in new AFL analysis show

The Seven Network today announced its all-new footy analysis show, Talking Finals, is set to hit the screens of Seven every week of the 2023 AFL Finals Series, from Tuesday, 5 September on Channel 7 and 7plus.

Hosted by 7AFL’s James Brayshaw, the new-look panel show will dive into footy’s biggest talking points, dissecting what really matters on the field, from the perspective of the game’s biggest names to taste recent finals success.

In a coup for football fans, three-time Premiership captain Trent Cotchin will join Seven’s Talking Finals team as a panellist, fresh off the back of his last ever AFL game for Richmond in Round 23.

Joining Cotchin will be Geelong Cats’ Premiership captain and the AFL’s most experienced Finals Series player, Joel Selwood, alongside Essendon legend and 7NEWS Melbourne’s Tim Watson.

7NEWS AFL Reporter Mitch Cleary will also update viewers on the trade and free agency market with a dedicated segment each week.

Managing Director Seven Melbourne and Head of Network Sport, Lewis Martin said: “With Finals looming, we know Australians are hungry for high quality and relevant footy news, views and analysis from the biggest names in the game.

“We’ve assembled a panel of experts, who truly know finals success. With 10 flags between them, nobody knows September better than Joel Selwood, Trent Cotchin and Tim Watson. Having achieved the ultimate prize in recent years, Joel and Trent will pull back the curtain and take us into the minds of current players, coaches and Clubs as they eye the last Saturday in September.

“Do not miss a minute when we go inside the inner sanctum with the biggest names to have tasted recent success, right here on Seven, Your home of Footy,” he said.

Talking Finals will air at 10.00pm AEST, straight after RFDS on Tuesday, 5 September, with the following three episodes to be broadcast at 9.00pm AEST Wednesdays on Channel 7 and 7plus.

All episodes will be available for streaming on the AFL Hub on 7plus, along with The Front Bar, Armchair Experts, match previews and reviews, plus interviews, bonus player access and features on demand.

Note that eps to air on Wednesdays after the first episode - guessing the timeslot given will just be for AFL states.

Given there are both QLD and NSW teams in the finals, Seven may want to air it at that time nationally to promote the games.
