Nah they won’t, maybe on 7mate but not main channel.
Based on the synopsis, it is about the last four clubs which entered the AFLW competition last year - Essendon, Hawthorn, Port Adelaide and Sydney.
With no players and no time, the final four AFLW expansion clubs defy odds to create history. Drama, grit and heart are on display as new and seasoned players take up space and carve out legacies.
What, finish last?
Essendon didn’t do too badly (two spots out of finals) but yeah, perhaps.
Given circumstances, especially only having four months gap between seasons (due to the move to from summer to spring, but that being delayed by how late we exited Covid lockdown in 2021)… I can’t imagine it was exactly optimal circumstances.
In any case, it’s a filler/taster at best, we all know that. It’s gap week in the mens comp, the All-Australian/awards night is on the Wednesday (shown on Fox), and AFLW season starts Friday. I guess they (the AFL as much as Seven) have to at least try and keep people interested.
It’s a bulldogs game tonight, so no Darcy in commentary, instead it’s Nicholson
We (the Dons) finished 10th so we didn’t do too bad!!

Note that schedule is (very) preliminary. Obviously Brisbane for example will get main channel coverage for the home team when appropriate and start times may change depending on venue.
The dates and times for first week of 2023 AFL finals will be announced tomorrow, if not tonight at the conclusion of Carlton v GWS.
The match-ups are
QF1 Coll/Melb (definitely MCG), EF1 Carl/Syd (?)
QF2 Bris/Port (Gabba), EF2 St K/GWS (?)
The way they’ve generally done it in recent years (as confirmed by that schedule above) is:
- set 1: QF Thursday night, EF Friday night
- set 2: QF Sat arvo/twilight, EF Sat night
Will be interesting to see how they piece week one all together with three games in Melbourne.
Usually the elimination finals get placed after the qualifying ones (on the same side of the draw) so the loser of the latter gets the longer break going into week two. But that would likely either sending Carlton/Sydney to Docklands, or moving Coll/Melb to Thursday night (because otherwise you’d have two games destined for the 'G on one day) rather than the Sat arvo on the prelim schedule.
St K/GWS is more likely to be the one to be at Docklands in my eyes, so I suspect the latter will be what happens.
Sounds like the actual slots be announced tomorrow.
Hasn’t there been multiple reports saying that, Pies v Dees will be MCG Thursday Night and that means Blues v Swans will be Friday night (most likely MCG).
This means Saints v Giants (MCG?) & Lions v Power will be Saturday
Worth noting that Docklands has not hosted an AFL final since 2011 (when St Kilda lost to the Sydney Swans in an elimination final), and not under its commercial name Marvel Stadium. Given St Kilda and GWS aren’t high-drawing clubs, it could make sense to fixture that match at Docklands; either way it will be the teams’ first meeting in Melbourne since 2018.
I mean, if the other two matches are Thurs/Fri, there is nothing stopping the AFL hosting St K/GWS at the MCG either… but I guess under their contract with the ground, they don’t necessarily have to. We’ll find out soon enough.
The AFL itself hasn’t put out the official announcement online tonight (although I’m sure the media outlets would know).
But that’s the only way I could see week one working out, so it makes perfect sense if that has been what’s announced.
To my knowledge, Docklands has only hosted six AFL finals since it opened in 2000:
- 2000 1st elimination final: Geelong Cats vs Hawthorn (the first ever final at the ground)
- 2001 2nd elimination final: Hawthorn vs Sydney Swans
- 2002 1st elimination final: Essendon vs West Coast Eagles
- 2005 1st elimination final: North Melbourne vs Port Adelaide
- 2007 1st elimination final: Hawthorn vs Adelaide Crows
- 2011 2nd elimination final: St Kilda vs Sydney Swans
On all but the latter two occasions, these were the only finals played in Melbourne on the day. For those two outliers, there were other matches played at the MCG.
The fixture of 2023 finals week one was announced early this morning, just before 7am AEST.
Thursday, September 7
First qualifying final
Collingwood v Melbourne at the MCG, 7.20pm AEST
Friday, September 8
First elimination final
Carlton v Sydney at the MCG, 7.50pm AEST
Saturday, September 9
Second elimination final
St Kilda v Greater Western Sydney at the MCG, 3.20pm AEST
Second qualifying final
Brisbane v Port Adelaide at the Gabba, 7.25pm AEST
Seven will take a while to release an official schedule
Here is a best guess based on this morning’s info.

AFLW returns to Your Home of Footy
Premiership captain Daisy Pearce bolsters Seven’s AFLW coverage
On the eve of the new season, the Seven Network’s AFL Women’s commentary team is locked and loaded, ready to bring fans an epic season eight of the AFLW competition. With fresh and familiar faces delivering all the action live, free and in HD*, there’s nowhere footy fans would rather be than on Seven and 7plus, Your Home of Footy.
In a massive bonus for fans, premiership hero and 7AFL expert commentator Daisy Pearce will join Seven’s AFLW team for the 2023 season, following her retirement from the game earlier this year.
Fresh off the back of her decorated career with Melbourne, Pearce will join Seven’s commentary team for the opening clash between reigning premiers Melbourne and Collingwood, where she will join her former teammates one last time to unfurl the 2022 premiership flag, under lights at Ikon Park from 7.00pm AEST live on Channel 7, 7mate and 7plus.
In addition to the team’s new recruit, Seven also welcomes back a star-studded line up of the game’s best callers and experts in 2023, including Jason Bennett, Nigel Carmody, Natalie Edwards, Melissa Hickey, Abbey Holmes, Sam Lane, Kate McCarthy, Alister Nicholson, Sarah Olle and Jo Wotton.
Alongside the talented crop of former players, Seven’s team will also include current Melbourne defender Libby Birch, while 7NEWS’ Anna Hay, Mark Soderstrom and Laura Spurway round out the team.
Ahead of the opening match, fans can tune in to Seven on Thursday night from 8.30pm AEST when Andy Maher, Mick Molly and Sam Pang return for everyone’s favourite sports show, The Front Bar.
The hosts will be joined by Daisy Pearce and legendary ruckman Nic Naitanui, following the announcement of his retirement after 213 games across 15 seasons with the West Coast Eagles.
The following matches will round out Seven’s AFLW Round One coverage:
• Carlton v Gold Coast SUNS, Saturday 1.00pm AEST (QLD only)
• Adelaide Crows v Port Adelaide, Saturday 2.30pm ACST (SA only)
• Hawthorn v Essendon, Saturday 7.00pm AEST
• North Melbourne Tasmanian Kangaroos v St Kilda, Sunday 1.00pm AEST
• Sydney Swans v GWS GIANTS, Sunday 3.00pm AEST (NSW only)
• Brisbane Lions v Richmond, Sunday 3.00pm AEST
• Fremantle v West Coast Eagles, Sunday 3.00pm AWST (WA only)
Throughout the AFLW season, fans can stream Seven’s weekly AFLW matches live and on demand on 7plus.
Fans in NSW, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia can also watch every game involving teams from their home states live and free on Seven and 7plus across every round of the season.
Abbey Holmes said the 2023 AFLW season is set to thrill, with the best of the competition’s upcoming talent and giants of the league, ready for their biggest season yet.
“We’ve reached an exciting time in the AFLW competition. With every team represented for a second year running, and a new breed of rising stars emerging as the competition’s most dominant players, there’s never been a better time to tune into AFLW,” Holmes said.
“Will Melbourne achieve the ultimate success again, with Kate Hore at the helm? Can the Brisbane Lions continue their fight for a second Premiership after coming eerily close so many times? Is Monique Conti the secret to Richmond’s success in their fifth season? The possibilities are endless in 2023. There’s so much excitement to come.
“They’re ready, we’re ready. We’ve arrived at the best season yet.”
