Seven AFL Coverage

According to online guides, next Sunday’s state league grand finals (VFL, SANFL and WAFL) have all been scheduled from 2pm to 6pm local time, to provide a solid lead-in to Seven’s primetime line-up.

###AFL Special: The Final Draw

Sunday 25 September at 10.00pm

The 2010 drawn Grand Final is etched into footy folklore as the most dramatic ending in AFL history.

This powerful documentary relives the emotions of St Kilda favourite Lenny Hayes, Saints skipper Nick Riewoldt, Magpie star Scott Pendlebury, the rare laconic musings of Ben Johnson, Collingwood skipper Nick Maxwell, the superstitions of Brendon Goddard and how that cruel bounce still haunts Stephen Milne.

Coaches Ross Lyon and Mick Malthouse deliver some raw insights, as all those involved tell their contrasting story with pride, humour and despair, including tragic fanatics like Molly Meldrum.

Note: will be shown at midnight in Sydney and Brisbane.

If the yourTV website is correct, then this is odd programming from Seven Sydney this weekend.

Geelong vs Swans on Friday night is on 7mate and 7HD from 7.30

But GWS vs Bulldogs on Saturday night is on the main channel, but not in HD.
What’s more, because the game starts at 5.15pm, Seven News Sydney isn’t on until 8pm.

I would have thought the 2 games would be on the same channel.

It’s a mess. How is Average Joe supposed to follow all these changes?

Yes it was subscription paid via Singtel TV.

Herald Sun says Belinda Riverso, partner of Adelaide midfielder Rory Sloane, will make her TV debut next Monday, co-hosting the Brownlow Medal red carpet with Hamish McLachlan. Rachael Finch and Andrew Welsh will be reporters. The medal count will include a tribute to 1989 winner Paul Couch (who died of a heart attack during a bike ride earlier this year) and a live performance by singer Alex Lloyd.

AFL Documentary – The Final Draw

The drawn 2010 AFL Grand Final match between the Collingwood and St Kilda Football Clubs is arguably one of the most dramatic moments in AFL history.

This powerful tale delves deep into the emotions of St Kilda favourite Lenny Hayes, Saints skipper Nick Riewoldt, Magpie star Scott Pendlebury, the rare laconic musings of Ben Johnson, Collingwood skipper Nick Maxwell, the superstitions of Brendon Goddard and how that cruel bounce still haunts Stephen Milne.

Coaches Ross Lyon and Mick Malthouse deliver some raw insights, as all those involved tell their contrasting story with pride, humour and despair, including tragic fanatics like Molly Meldrum.

The questions surrounding the Grand Final match-up of whether the Saints could find redemption after losing the 2009 Premiership match, or could the Magpies finally break a 20-year premiership drought mounted leading into that one day in September.

It was a match that didn’t provide answers to those questions, but rather a rollercoaster of emotions for players, coaches, fans and the Australian sporting public alike.

Introduced by Bruce McAvaney and airing on Channel 7 and 7mate in AFL Grand Final Week, The Final Draw, is an AFL produced documentary from acclaimed filmmaker Peter Dickson.

In this film, Dickson tells the story of how the 2010 AFL Grand Final unfolded and the lasting effects it had on all those involved.

Taking a unique and at times emotional look back at this remarkable day with raw insight from all the main players, Dickson said the process took over eight months.

“For a long while now, I’ve been wanting to tell the story of what is now the last ever drawn Grand Final,” Mr Dickson said.

“I’m very appreciative to the AFL and to Channel 7 for the opportunity to apply my documentary style to this story.

“I’m so grateful to both coaches, Ross (Lyon) and Mick (Malthouse) and all those who took part, for giving their time and being so honest.

“Everyone offered up such tremendous insight into the match day, the moments following the final siren, the week leading into the decider and those years since.

“I know how difficult it was, especially for the St Kilda guys, to delve back into it considering the result a week later.

“But I feel this is as much of a film that honours St Kilda as it does Collingwood, and the legacy both playing groups have left for their clubs and the game.

“I have made this in a way that I hope appeals to all sporting lovers and also all fans of AFL footy, as it was truly an epic day in our sporting story.

“To get the opportunity to tell this story, it has been one of the best experiences I have had as a documentary filmmaker,” he said.

The Final Draw features interviews and behind the scenes access with the following people involved in the 2010 AFL Grand Final: Ross Lyon, Mick Malthouse, Eddie McGuire, Michael Nettlefold, Nick Riewoldt, Leigh Montagna, Stephen Milne, Ben Johnson, Luke Ball, Scott Pendlebury, Nick Maxwell, Brendon Goddard, Andrew Demetriou and Lenny Hayes.

The Final Draw was written, produced and directed by Peter Dickson from the AFL.

How long has Bruce McAvaney been hosting the Brownlow Medal for Seven? only Peter Landy has done it the most years after Bruce, but you could add Mike Williamson and Peter Ewin too. and Eddie McGuire and Stephen Quartermain to the hosting list.

From my memory Bruce hosted every Brownlow from 1990 to 2001, then 2007, and every Brownlow since 2011. He missed 2009 through a death in the family and Sandy Roberts hosted for his one and only time.

Stephen Quartermain hosted a few & did very well at it, between 2002 & 2011. Bruce tends to get carried away, example was a few years ago when he wouldn’t let go of Dane Swan’s hand).

Eddie McGuire also hosted a couple for Ch 9.

ADDED NOTE:

When Ch 10 broadcasted the Brownlow Medal, certainly in 2010, they wouldn’t just use Quarters, but their other commentators as well.

Tim Lane & Anthony Hudson both presented special segments (after ad break) that year :+1:

Would it really be so hard to find some other matches to play in the marathon? They’ve had that same package for years.

The title Grand Final footy marathon basically limits the matches Seven can show. In the past when it was just footy marathon Seven also showed memorable matches during the home and away season of the past five decades. The AFL owns the copyright to almost all the VFL/AFL matches on TV now.
