With Sunday night games it becomes more problematic what Seven puts on the main channel in Sydney, Brisbane and Perth. It matters a bit less on a Thursday but they could end up handing the night over to in three markets.
It becomes even more problematic if a WA team is playing on a Sunday night, as 7 would have to cut the news program in Perth early there like they have been doing recently. Then there’s also the fact that if a NSW or QLD team is playing, they would have to move that to the main channel, and move whatever programming they usually air in that slot to another channel. Essentially, 7 wouldn’t be able to air important programming on Sunday Nights, because if you aired something like Dancing with the Stars on sunday night, you couldn’t justify it considering it would only air on 7 in 2-3 markets and it could be moved to secondary channels in other weeks. If 7 ever does push for more Sunday night games, it would basically be the end of any important programming on that slot.
Nonsense, they just need to be more flexible with their programming.
Could be. It will also be the first time a player cam is used for a home and away AFL match. Player cam has been a feature of Nine’s coverage of State of Origin every year since Spidercam came about.
I’m sure Seven and the AFL will be thrilled seeing that! Good on Nine though TBH ![]()

Although, was this really ‘news worthy’, especially for a live-cross to Christine Ahern? Slow news morning?
I remember back in 2007, Ten had ‘Aker Cam’ for Akermanis’ first match against the Lions for the Doggies. Obviously not spider cam but it was well ahead of its time in any case.
Player can in action.
There is score graphic but there is the full 7 commentary. From what I’ve seen (1 goal) there is also no ad breaks
I was expecting silence after goals because Fox aren’t taking their commentary anymore but there was analysis and stuff almost immediately after. Even now after the first Essendon goal.
The reason they stopped doing commentary after goals was to try and screw over Fox. Since as you say Fox are doing their own commentary, there’s now no reason for 7 to hobble thier own coverage during the ad breaks.
This could be one of the least watched Friday AFL games ever, many wouldn’t have even bothered tuning-in tonight and even Seven News during the week talked up its highly likely landslide result.
I mean, Essendon’s recent woes and publicised fixturing disaster vs a top team in Geelong and at their home fortress (and both rarely play each other there - I think first time in 35 years and only fourth in history).
FTA channels could get a bump tonight with Victorians and AFL markets seeking alternatives, mainly m/c and also possibly Nine’s NRL for those who still want a sport option.
My point was why talk when no one is watching? I guess it for the commentators own flow etc
Also I think this is new by 7 after the final siren. A bigger score graphic
But I think these stats are not
Would Seven be doing this for the benefit of international broadcasters given that the Seven feed is the one (I am fairly sure) is supplied as the ‘world feed’ for the games they produce?
Now that Fox do their own commentary they may be far less concerned about trying to make the Fox product less appealing for their own benefit (such as the silence during ad breaks for instance).
Yes. That is correct.
The ratings are in. And the AFL game last night was ranked (total TV national reach):
- No. 3 overall
- No. 1 among 25-54
- No. 1 among 16-39
- No. 3 among grocery shoppers
If reordered by average audience:
- No. 7 overall
- No. 4 among 25-54
That confirms one thing: Viewers will watch AFL, no matter if two teams are playing for a flag or a spoon.
ironically it wasn’t and it even matched the NRL that night - which surprised me.
Also if it’s between two traditional rivals like Essendon vs Carlton (which as we all know will be a Fox Footy exclusive).
New AFLW promo aired this evening in Melbourne. Features Abbey Holmes, Nick Riewoldt, Ebony Marinoff, Daisy Pearce, Monique Conti, Erin Phillips etc.
