In his weekly column today, The Sunday Telegraph’s Phil Rothfield has praised Seven’s decision to not broadcast Essendon v Carlton in Round 24.
SAINT
Good on Channel 7 for taking a stand against the AFL by refusing to televise the final round prime-time Thursday night game between Carlton (13th) and Essendon (15th) because it has no bearing on the finals. Yet in rugby league we’re left with rubbish match-ups on Channel 9 between premiership also-rans in the final five weeks of the competition at 4pm on Sunday afternoons.
I’m Pretty sure he’s misrepresenting how the rights work and shows his ongoing foolishness. He’s embarrassing. He then bags nine for the games they’re airing when he has praised the rights deal when Fox signed but none are victims of how the rights and games are distributed, yet again Rothfield has no fucking clue.
4pm Sunday is hardly a marquee slot too - for any power Nine have had in dictating the schedule, they’ve never really insisted on the Sunday afternoon game having strong matchups consistently.
There is a concerted effort from football media to change how the draw is determined - this, to me is just another entry into that
Jack Heverin did another VFL game yesterday, maybe 7 has signed him up for the AFLW season? Have they done the usual press release with commentators, experts and hosts etc for the AFLW?
Makes sense; 7 has footy crews in both WA & SA, though it seems to go against the WA-biased gimmick I thought these calls were supposed to have.
Won’t happen again this year, though; next two Perth matches are Fre V Bri & WCE V Syd, after that it’s finals so 7 is the host broadcaster anyway.
I think from next season 7 should have their own call for SA games too. They have enough people to do it. They have Soderstrom & Casey for the calling and can use Kane if they want etc.
I think the WA broadcast was a test this season maybe in 7 heartland to see if the ratings have a decrease from the normal Fox broadcast. Also in SA they might actually be at the ground compared to the Fox call.
