SEN (Radio)

Finey’s Final Siren was essential listening on Friday nights. Even if I had listened to the match on Triple M or even been at the MCG I’d always switch over to Finey after the match.

Here’s a chance for someone like Triple M or 3AW to bring back Finey after their football broadcasts!

Triple M have moved away from post-match talkback for a number of years now.

3AW had Rex Hunt up until last year doing late night footy nightline. But I think 3AW would be a safe place for Finey. Given a large chunk of the SEN lineup from 2017 (last year before Hutchy took over) are now at 3AW:

Ox and Marko, Daniel Harford, KB, Matt Granland, etc.

Just for those interested, the Aust open final was not on 1170 last night. The Spirit of Sport was on instead. So far only the NRL grand final has the power to shift the time.

I know Spirit of Sport is there solely to appease the Council of Churches, but that’s still ridiculous. Live sport on a sports network should always take priority over any other programming.
Surely a better slot for a program like that would be around 9am on a Sunday where it won’t get in the way of actual proper live sport.

I am thinking they are paying top dollar for the slot?

I am thinking they just have no idea

Council of Churches, SEN or both?

One thing I can never understand is just why there is still a connection with the Council of Churches, they sold to John Singleton back in 1994! almost 30 years ago.

Maybe something stupid like a 50 year deal or something signed many moons ago?

Seems like a 99 year lease like land in Canberra? You can use the radio station so long as Sunday night which has a certain show that these days which is now prerecorded. The old 2CH had Kel Richards and he took calls.

I am not against religion, it does definitely has a place in radio, maybe sports radio too? Many sports stars are religious and perhaps their faith helps them to be great sports stars. It just doesn’t really match up well with a sports station with some live flagship sports on a Sunday night. There is a whole morning of no live sport on Sundays they could run the spirit of sport then and even make it live and take calls. Perhaps the tradition people go to Church in the morning then in the evening on Sunday they listen to the radio.

Off topic, I think there was a time sports was not allowed on Sunday. Certainly horse racing was not on Sunday back when I was a kid. The match of the day for the NSWRL was on Saturday back in the day (in the 60s?). Sunday night sport did not start until cricket had day night matches. Before the 80s, most stations had a religious show Sunday nights on radio? 2SM did have religious shows on Sunday nights back in the 70s?

Yes it’s bizarre.

When you have almost no listeners I guess it doesn’t really matter.

I can remember when Fr Jim McLaren was doing call-back on 2UW every Sunday night - something he handled very well. 2KY had a collection of half-hour programs from different groups, including Armstrong’s “World Tomorrow” broadcasts.

Unfortunately the teenage listeners made a fool of the poor man with their made up stories

I confirmed with someone older than me , back in the 60s no Sunday Rugby League was on (even during the day). I get the feeling “1170” is holding onto this tradition despite being a sports station. 2GB/4BC still has Bill Crews. I don’t think the ABC has Sunday religious programming anymore. It doesn’t appear 3aw has any religious programming on Sunday night

4BC has no heritage of this Sydney program. It is a legacy of the MRN gutting of the station in 2015.

Sport 927 Melb may have a Sunday evening spiritual program still running.

He must be a zillion years old!

Father Gerard Dowling is 90 years old this year. The program started in 1973, so if he can hang in there it will celebrate 50 years in 2023.
