I would have liked to have seen SEN buy it, as it would have given them a level playing field to Nine, ARN, SCA and Nova as well as better utilise the DAB+ spectrum. They could have used some of the spectrum to bring SEN SA to Melbourne audiences and brought back Classic Rock Radio.
EDIT: A level playing field in the Melbourne market.
After todayâs microscopic SEN ratings for SydneyâŚ
I am a Sydney boy and this SEN rubbish is a great example of another big fat Mexican failure up here. Sydney has a strong heritage of horse racing through 2KY now Sky Sports Radio. And all the general sport we need we get through 2GB and also 2SM + ABC. The dumb bags at SEN HQ have zero understanding of the Sydney market. Its really hilarious they are wasting so much effort & money for such a pathetic result in Australiaâs number 1 city. Unlike Melbourne - in Sydney we donât need a 1000 hours of sports radio each day. Sydney has far more interesting pursuits like getting over covid and opening up our great state. Go away SEN we donât want you. Bring back 2CH 1170 and the ratings will fly.
Iron laws of arithmetic⌠12 months ago 1170 2CH rated almost 5% in Sydney. Since 1170 SEN ⌠less than 1%. What a waste of a great heritage AM frequency.
Re, the ratings of SEN: Comparisons with Talking Lifestyle come to mind, except this time Melbourne has the slightly more successful (but still fairly average rating) station rather than Sydney.
Ratings might be low but surely theyâre making big coin on gambling and wagering advertising (and possible alcohol advertising during live sport?) or overinflating the audience figures by telling advertiserâs thereâs a hidden audience online or listening through the app?
They have a national network of around 20 stations, including SEN Track, so for them it would be about scale rather than high ratings in each city. National advertising relating to sport and wagering.
2sm is another example of a station who donât care on ratings in Sydney. Its about the network. To similar extent Sky Sports Radio is similar. In my view SEN/Sky Radio are in the radio ratings more for curiosity sake. If it is low whilst it isnât good but compared to say a 2DAY FM being very low it isnât as devastating. I am sure if Alan decides to work for 2SM they may want to dip in the ratings again.
One could argue for 2day FM it is also about the âHit network hubâ too. If it was totally about the ratings perhaps 2day FM may have made a station more unique to Sydney. Still I think ratings mean more to 2day FM than the above mentioned stations.
I quite enjoy SEN the content is good at different points of the day, like Joel & Fletch is a good listen and better than Talkin Sport and repeats of a Melbourne breakfast show. Thatâs just me though. The problem is they need to fill out the day with other things and thatâs where they fail I reckon. But I honestly donât think they care too much about ratings because you arenât ever going to rate well being a sport station, thereâs not enough fanatics in Sydney to get a good share, not to mention they donât advertise in sydney at all, you wouldnât know itâs on.
Weird that itâs only SEN Peel that theyâve been able to get on DAB.
Surely a national deal with Grant/Capital - perhaps in exchange for putting Hot Country on DAB in Sydney/Melbourne - should be a priority over getting off band AM licenses running.
Iâm kinda somehow surprised SEN donât do a deal with Grants and Capital to run SEN on Overnights on selected stations within selected markets? Perhaps not financially worth their while.
