Your defence of Hutchy is admirable, however I don’t share your admiration. I don’t however hate him. That’s a bit harsh.
And a bloody good brand at that. Used to be a good station that I listened to all day. Now it’s just this “blokey rave, rants and bluster” style radio similar to that of their leader.
All of the above.
And assist him financially when it all comes crashing down.
I loved SEN of the 2000s - KB’s mad rants in the morning, Finey’s final siren (which was especially entertaining some nights after big teams had bad losses), World Sport Overnight. It might not have been 3AW-level product but it was entertaining and talked about what I wanted to hear.
Admittedly now I hear much less living interstate but they certainly gutted good chunks of what was a well-loved station. I still wish Hutchy well - I welcome that he’s investing in sport and in radio, two things I love. I don’t quite get the track stuff given it’s just competing with existing services but I guess it helps pay the bills?
As annoying as I find Hutchy, it is true he has put his money where his mouth is. He has expanded SEN into other states, which is a good thing. However, I think he could’ve done better - like not buying 2CH and buying 2SM, given 2CH had fans, whereas 2SM didn’t and no one would’ve missed the amateur hour of programming (referring to bulk of the schedule) and necromancy (referring to Lawsie). I guess 2CH was a easier target.
Also, why do we need a competing racing service? And finally, the website - get someone else in to fix it! Using Google Docs for the live sports guide? That’s local school level - they can get away with it, not an ASX listed company!
Aside from Bill. If Hutchy and co put up with the right amount of money, Bill would’ve sold. To quote Kerry Packer, “There is a little bit of the whore in all of us, gentlemen. What is your price?”
You don’t know Bill. The old codger already has more money than he could ever need. His network is all about his ego. He is quoted as having a desire to own a station in every market in NSW. He’s had many offers to sell and has never even remotely entertained them. The prospective purchasers are turned away before a price can even be discussed. The only time he ever sold a station so to secure the purchase of his Coffs/Port/Orange stations - it was reportedly a straight swap with no money changing hands.
That would be a bargain. Going rate is 6-8x.
In the past he claimed the network to be worth $200 million while others in the industry estimated closed to $60 mil.
That’s the only chance of anything happening. The kids aren’t in the business so might sell once Bill and Pam die. That could be years away still.
But who would buy? Grant Broadcasters probably have first dibs given their connection through TRSN. Janet would also do anything to get Dubbo back.
