SEN (Radio)

SEN Melbourne on 1116 AM sounds bad on a decent AM radio. Seems they’ve cut the audio off at 5kHz (or possibly lower). Like listening down an old fashioned landline phone.

It’s not coming out of the studio like that. Was able to hear the same show on 3CS on 1134 with full fidelity. Stupid move.

Do you think this is a recent change? I must admit I rarely listen on AM. Mostly DAB+ or the app.

But they have definitely never sounded as good as 693 or 774. However I reckon a stronger signal than 1278 and 1377 especially close to the city. 3AK improved signal strength dramatically when switching from 1503 to 1116 many years ago. Just ashame the audio quality is lacking.

The syndicated audio from SEN (which I assume still uses the Nine Radio Syndicated satellite delivery network) actually sounds woeful to me.

It might be full fidelity but it’s only mono and heavily MPEG compressed. The same when they take Nine Radio News and Neil Mitchell from 3AW. You notice it more on FM stations taking SEN/3AW content like Gold 98.3FM Bairnsdale and 3YB FM 94.5 Warrnambool.

I don’t know. Was going around the AM dial yesterday and the difference between SEN and all other AM stations stuck out like dogs. I’m pretty sure it wasn’t like that a month ago.

And interesting about the feed quality. 3YB’s audio is way over processed so that wouldn’t help. Think the station is over deviating as well.

Yeah I agree, 2CH audio quality has gone south lately. It seems to have lowest volume compared to the others, I have to turn up the volume. Even at 48k.

Incredibly noticeable when coming out of the syndicated shows into local ad breaks.

3CS though has the best fidelity of any station in/near Melbourne, at least when I checked a few weeks ago. It sounds terrific on a good receiver

SENTrack Darling Downs (Toowoomba) 91.5FM bursts out of the gates this week, the fifth station of its kind to launch in Queensland and the 11th in a fast-growing national network.

I note licence still registered to SCA from ACMA records until May 4th, 2021. Is this a licence lease to SEN or will licence be sold to them?

I was only listening to 91.5 with Triple M Country a matter of weeks ago.

That would be “Sold to them”

Ok it’s ‘now’ been updated on the ACMA webpages - thanks for the update :+1:

First casualty at 1170 SEN?

Looking at their Insta story it simply says, “Breakfast” behind Jimmy Smith.

The other day it still said, “Breakfast with Vossy”.

But they’re still playing Vossy’s ads promoting SEN as the home of sport.

Can anyone confirm his departure?

The Twitter page is claiming it is the “Summer Breakfast Show”.

His personal Twitter account has no news. But a couple of people on Twitter have asked if he is coming back - he hasn’t replied yet.

Gone.

If anyone should be gone from SEN it’s Hutchy

Bit hard when you’re a board member, and a shareholder and a rather substantial one at that.

So many Hutchy haters on this forum. Which category are you?

  1. Turned off 3MP/Classic Rock Radio (moot point now that Ace Radio have it).
  2. Turned off Aussie and KOOOL digital.
  3. Turned 2CH into DAB+ only.
  4. Treatment of ex hosts like Mark Allen, David Schwartz and Kevin Bartlett

At the end of the day, the above points are just collateral damage in this business of radio in 2021. Far worse has been lost in so many other media businesses not just in 2020 but in the decade previous.

Hutchy puts his money where his mouth is. Not just his substantial financial stake in SEN but he has worked very hard personally to turn it into a national network. Where before it was a Melbourne only brand.

Whether it rates or not is besides the point, it’s now a national brand churning out live sport content and syndicated sport news content that is popping up on Google and Apple News too.

The company is now pulling in more revenue since the Crocmedia/PNW merger than those two companies ever could have on their own. So much synergy in this business now with a great team of people working very hard and Craig Hutchison is the visionary that made a lot of that happen.

I’m by no means a fan boy, but after following Australian media now for 30 years I know an individual success story when I see one. He’s taken on a lot of personal risk. And who knows. In an industry which is struggling to remain relevant in 2021, in many years to come Australian sports fans may owe a lot to Hutchy for the legacy he has created in sports media in this country.

People outside of the market won’t understand this like Sydneysiders do, but 2CH’s switch to DAB+ has essentially resulted in the demise of our last truly local commercial station with all others strongly aligned with major networks. While certainly not a behemoth, 2CH was also rating fairly reasonably prior to the major format change(s) in October.

By contrast…if the recent DAB+ figures for SENTrack and SEN Victoria are anything to go by, I’m not expecting grand things in the ratings for 1170 SEN come the Survey #1 results release on March 11. Sure I’ll give SEN some credit for at least having a bit more NRL coverage (an essential for any Sports radio station which wants to be taken seriously in the Sydney market) than Macquarie Sports Radio ever had, but that’s about all I can say.
