SEN (Radio)

Back on today as for the first time I’m receiving it in Perth which is quite surprising - must be a good day for MW conditions as all the lower band (1400-1700 kHz is lower not upper right?) stations from Busselton and Margaret River are in on a mid-morning!

SEN really needs a different frequency and/or transmitter site for Perth - atm I’m getting 1494 from Margaret River better than 657 with its continuous high-pitch whine from the northern suburbs.

Yep got 1494 today. Still much weaker than 756 MMM from the same site here in Bunbury.

I get that whistle on SEN 621 as well. Been like that since the Easy Listening 621 days.

SEN has also opened a new office in the city.

Unusually, SEN Track Canberra is taking the AFL this evening (GWS V Brisbane) rather than SEN’s NRL match (Melbourne V South Sydney).

While GWS is a notionally Canberra team, they and AFL in general don’t usually get a run on SEN Track, so to have them on instead of the NRL which does normally get a run is most unusual.

The match is being played in Canberra as well, wonder if thats a factor

Possibly. Hasn’t affected their programming decisions in Canberra previously but it would be nice if that is a factor and affects future programming decisions.

If SEN leases out the 693am frequency, what other avenues does it have to broadcast into Brisbane the sports it has the rights to, including AFL, NRL, NBL and cricket (SEN still has exclusive radio rights to BBL this summer)?

if they don’t lift from a 1.0 it will be bloody hard to find decent sponsors to keep the lights on (and i’m already hearing parts of hutchies empire are on cash on delivery from some suppliers)

It also has 1053kHz in Brisbane; not the same power but a city wide licence, plus it has multiple channels on DAB+

Don’t forget it wasn’t that long ago people were writing off SEN Sydney and the ratings for that this year have been very positive. Understand that doesn’t mean the exact same thing will happen in QLD but I wouldn’t be completely writing it off yet.

It’s been a good week for Hutchy. Sold the Wildcats for over triple that they paid for and great SEN numbers.

Well done 1170SEN on todays results.

I do think that the SEQ market is probably a much tougher one for them to crack, for a few reasons:
-non-music stations tend to struggle in the ratings there regardless of quality, case in point 4BC rates a lot lower than their southern counterparts
-the station started off on a sour note with a lot of listeners, given that it replaced what was one of the most popular stations in the market (certainly when you compare to 2CH)
-Queenslanders tend to be proudly parochial especially when it comes to sport and given that the station takes much of it’s content from either Sydney or Melbourne that I suspect turns off some listeners

My recommendation to them would be:
-team up with someone like Ace to share the 693AM licence- run music most of the time and flick over to live sport when there’s something on like NRL or cricket (similar in concept to Gold Sport in NZ)
-run dedicated streams on DAB+ with a 24/7 SENQ and a 24/7 music station run by their partner

This wouldn’t be giving up on the market completely but would help bring some listeners back I imagine.

Mediaweek reports:

Speaking to Garry and Tim on SEN 1116 today, Cornes confirmed he will be staying with SEN. Among his work for SEN, Cornes co-hosts the Melbourne breakfast show with David King. Garry Lyon and Tim Watson asked Cornes about other TV shows on the network. He said he definitely would not do Dancing with the Stars, but he would be keen to do SAS Australia if Seven brings it back.

SEN chief executive Craig Hutchison indicated to his Melbourne breakfast hosts he may have to fine tune some parts of Cornes’ contract with the radio network.

(Kane) Cornes failed to show up on time for his radio show with King and the pair were replaced by fellow SEN presenters Jordan Kounelis and Nimz Azoor.

But it wasn’t King’s fault - he was in fact locked out of the Adelaide recording studio.

The man who was supposed to let him in - his mate Cornes - was nowhere to be seen.

The pair eventually logged on about 15 minutes later than usual, and Cornes was out of breath as he addressed the situation.
