SEN (Radio)

Has SEN lost the broadcasting rights to NRL? Aren’t broadcasting the Vegas games.

Threw all their resources at the cricket maybe and when that was over couldn’t put together a call? I guess they could have done it digitally…

Think SEN only has rights to Thursday and Friday NRL plus Origin and finals.

Big three days of sport on SEN starting today, with the second cricket test between NZ and Australia leading into NRL and AFL coverage at night.

There’s no NRL coverage listed this weekend on SEN. NZ is taking the Warriors v Storm tonight but doesn’t look it’s being broadcast elsewhere. Have they given up the rights as part of their cost-cutting?

Apparently they have to sub licence the rights from SCA. So they can only do some games.

So they’ll only do games SCA doesn’t want now? Interesting.

Those SEN games are also in simulcast on 2SM as far as I can tell - as they are also promoting on their website the Thursday/Friday night games.

So I assume that means the same call is on both stations? Further diminishing the value of the rights to SEN.

Yep, same arrangement as last year. SEN for the most part only called Thursday night and early Friday, plus finals and Origin. 2SM and the Super Radio Network took the same call as SEN for regular season matches with some variation around Origin and finals when SEN produced multiple calls.

Did SEN not do weekend afternoon/evening games last year?

That’s right. They scaled back to just two games per week last year, and decided to run talk shows which kept a bit of an eye on the football instead over the weekend. Some weekends were taken up by V8 Supercars too.

From memory their reasoning was a combination of poor ratings for the weekend calls, the Sunday rights changing and giving Nine Radio the marquee Sunday 4pm game, and affiliate numbers on weekends being much lower than Thursday/Friday.

Gerard Whateley staying with SEN for three years.

Seems unlikely then that Gerard Whateley will be added to Fox Footy’s commentary roster next year, given his work schedule already involves weekday radio, weeknight AFL 360, and 3 x AFL games per week for SEN. Sunday tends to be his only day off as it is and I can’t imagine he would want to give that up, nor do I imagine that Fox would want to sign him for just one game per week.

Not sure if this is the right place but does anyone know what happened to Tony Kemp? Looks like he’s been silently removed from the start of the year.

Not sure if anything happened which resulted in Tony Kemp leaving SENZ, but he seems to be doing a weekly show and podcast now. Monday afternoons on something called “The Platform” with Martin Devlin which is later packaged as “The Tony Kemp Podcast” which seems to be available on all of the main podcast platforms.

My intel is his contract was up and it wasn’t renewed.

SEN Spirit Margaret River 1494 off-air since Friday. A regular occurrence for 1494.

SEN continuing to promote SEN Track AM, even though it’s off the air (and has been for as long as I can remember), through ads in the wrong newspapers.

Ad in today’s Advocate newspaper (the Burnie and Devonport paper, the Launceston paper is the Examiner).
