SEN (Radio)

will be around for a very long time

as soon as restrictions on gambling advertising come in they are dead. It feels like all they are doing is building a network for someone like vision to come along and buy (who else would want it? the metro stations are too expensive for community broadcasters and commercials don’t want the narrowcast freqs)

The sooner the better, complete utter madness

Noticed that SEN seems to have quietly dropped the Supercars. They aired the first round in Newcastle but haven’t seen any broadcasts since then. Thought it might have been due to the rounds in between not being ‘marquee’ events but this weekend is a marquee event and still no coverage. If I remember rightly originally they were planning on covering every round.

According to Supercars website, SEN will broadcast Townsville 500 on Sunday only.

Great news, my observation was based on Saturday given that SEN’s broadcast guide only goes one day in advance.

I’d say they went after the rights to cover Bathurst. But I’d say they’ll do the minimal until after the football seasons have finished.

How does SEN as a brand stay afloat? The return just isn’t good… how does it keep getting rights and afford them?

Digital rights, streaming through their app, corporate media contracts and studio leasing, consulting and generating original social media content.

The disregard SEN has for AM radio is horrible.

They should leave terrestrial radio altogether and simply focus on the digital aspects of their business.

Too many once great frequencies are being gobbled up by this network and the rampage must stop.

Once everything dries up, the network will have to be dismantled, and by then it’ll be too late to resurrect the once better-performing stations such as 4KQ and 2CH.

In other words just a load of crap

That’s backward thinking Mr Rossco. It’s hardly “just a load of crap”.

This is how the Gen Y and Gen Z sports fans are consuming content. There’s no denying that. They stream and they use social media endlessly. SEN’s TikTok content is hugely popular. I don’t consume it at all personally, but these kids are the future and they are.

From what I can understand from that article is that 1170SEN’s news comes from 693SENQ?

Last time I heard SEN, their news service is simply five or so headlines, going straight into sports news.

I am surprised there are 4x journos on-ground in Brisbane.

Probably carry-over from the pre-SEN days. I’d say they’ll go eventually. Unless they are reading for the rest of the country?
Doubt they are actually “on the ground” though and likely just re-hash stories from the newswire.

Yes, you generally hear either Vanessa, or another QLD voice like Mark Braybrook, do the news for Sydney, during breakfast and mornings at least. I usually can’t stand the 1170 schedule much so can’t tell you whether they eventually switch to a Melbourne-based reader later in the day.

edit for those reading later: you do sometimes get Mark reading the news for Melbourne on a Saturday morning. So it does sound like a conscious decision to build some sort of thing out of what they inherited from 4KQ.

SEN is possibly all that is left for AM (except for RPH and TAB) - its probably a good thing most AM radio Tx sites are in a swamp because if the land was worth anything they would all be gone by now. The bulk of AM sites would only be worth what the copper salvage is.

Craig Hutchison has told The Sunday Telegraph’s Phil Rothfield that SEN will broadcast every Tottenham Hotspur game in the 2023/24 Premier League season, which starts next weekend. Craig said that Spurs coach Ange Postecoglou had always been very generous with his time on SEN.

Sounds like a similar deal to what they did with the last few weeks of Celtic as Ange was heading towards an SPFL title (which was probably contra more than anything). Given they’re already covering soccer overnight - fine by me, it’s a modicum of local interest. I presume any games outside the afternoon timeslots would head off to Fanatic or their app because they won’t want to get rid of breakfast/Gerard in the morning.

Any chance SEN updates its imaging? Could sound so much more dynamic/contemporary.
