Meet Miri Matteson (Daisy Haggard, Episodes, Uncle). She’s just arrived back in her home town - a place she no longer recognises - to the dysfunctional family home she involuntarily vacated as a teenager, living with the parents she can no longer hold a conversation with.

Just released from prison after eighteen years and trying to nudge her way back into society, Miri is the ultimate Adult Beginner: a funny, endearing, awkward woman - determined to move on from her violent past.

But life post-prison is not proving easy. Her Tamagotchi has gone the same way as her idols George Michael, Bowie, and Prince, her parents Caroline (Geraldine James) and Oscar (Richard Durden) are presenting a happy and united front, but the cracks are beginning to show. If only she could land a job - that could be the ticket to a new life. With no money and no driver’s license, Miri is forced to seek work in the small town that remembers her only for what she did all those years ago.

To top things off, there’s chemistry bubbling between her and her new neighbour Billy. Can she keep her past hidden from him? And who is this stranger in town who seems to be stalking Miri’s every move?
With the terrible truth of what happened all those years ago constantly threatening to surface, Miri’s struggle to move on becomes ever more desperate - but in a small town where her crime was the biggest headline of the decade, will anyone ever let her?

A potent mix of comedy and drama, Back To Life hails from Two Brothers Pictures, the production powerhouse behind hit UK series Fleabag.

The Looming Tower

11 September on SBS On Demand

Based on the Pulitzer-Prize winning book, The Looming Tower traces the rising threat of Osama Bin Laden and Al-Qaeda in the late 1990s and how the rivalry between the FBI and CIA during that time may have inadvertently set the path for the tragedy of 9/11. The series follows members of the I-49 Squad in New York and Alec Station in Washington, D.C., the counter-terrorism divisions of the FBI and CIA, respectively, as they travel the world fighting for ownership of information while seemingly working toward the same goal - trying to prevent an imminent attack on U.S. soil.
John O’Neill (Jeff Daniels), the bullheaded chief of the I-49 Squad, is rightly convinced that the U.S. has been targeted for an attack by Al-Qaeda. He and his protégé, Muslim-American FBI agent Ali Soufan (Tahar Rahim), face deliberately insufficient cooperation from other organizations within the federal government. Specifically, their counterparts within the CIA, led by the frequently antagonistic Martin Schmidt (Peter Sarsgaard). Convinced he’s by far the smartest person in the room, Schmidt, along with his Alec Station protégé, Diane Marsh (Wrenn Schmidt), opt to disobey Presidential orders and horde information from the FBI under the misguided notion that the CIA is the only government agency equipped to battle potential terror threats from abroad.

O’Neill and Soufan travel overseas to investigate the bombings of the Nairobi Embassy, Dar es Salaam Embassy and the U.S.S. Cole, while interrogating terrorists in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, gathering important intelligence piece by piece. Meanwhile in D.C., Schmidt and Marsh are given critical information of their own - the knowledge that known Al-Qaeda members, whom O’Neill and Soufan are trying to track down, have entered the United States.

Working with Schmidt to keep that information private, Marsh rises up through the ranks of Alec Station. Soufan also rises through the FBI, using his intimate knowledge of Islam and Arabic to form bonds with foreign intelligence agents and suspects alike. Schmidt and O’Neill however, experience individual professional demise due to their own aggressive stubbornness.

The professional and personal worlds come to a head as Al-Qaeda operatives in the U.S., which the CIA has long known about, set their plan in motion.

The Looming Tower is executive produced by Daniel Futterman (Showrunner), Alex Gibney, Lawrence Wright, Craig Zisk, and Adam Rapp. The Looming Tower is a Legendary Television production for Hulu in the U.S. and Amazon Video outside of the U.S.

The Looming Tower stars Jeff Daniels (John O’Neill), Tahar Rahim (Ali Soufan), Wrenn Schmidt (Diane Marsh), Bill Camp (Robert Chesney), Louis Cancelmi (Vince Stuart), Virginia Kull (Kathy Shaughnessy), Ella Rae Peck (Heather), Sullivan Jones (Floyd Bennet) with Michael Stuhlbarg (Richard Clarke) and Peter Sarsgaard (Martin Schmidt).

Previously seen on Amazon Prime.

New Girl

image

Tuesday 1 October on SBS On Demand

New Girl is an ensemble comedy that takes a modern look at friendship and romance, as a group of five friends attempt to find their respective places in the world, while begrudgingly accepting the responsibilities of adulthood - with often hilarious results.

After going through a rough breakup, awkward and upbeat Jess (Zooey Deschanel) moves in with three single guys. Intelligent and witty Nick (Jake Johnson) is an underachiever who took the bartender off-ramp on his road to success. Schmidt (Max Greenfield) obsesses over his social standing and looks at Jess as a personal project. Winston (Lamorne Morris) is a competitive former athlete who, after realising he will never become a pro, moves into the loft. Together with Jess’ best friend, Cece (Hannah Simone), they bond to form an unlikely, and dysfunctional, family.

Queen of quirky Zooey Deschanel leads an incredible cast as she navigates through the twists and turns of life. New Girl’s seventh and final season is set three years after season six’s gripping finale.
This is the first time all seven seasons are available together.

New Girl will also start screening from the very beginning on SBS VICELAND, weeknights at 6.00pm from Monday, 7 October.

So Ten no longer has the rights, They tried it again on 10 Peach earlier this year but stopped after a few episodes oddly.

Not sure if the final season has ever aired on free to air. Maybe on Foxtel.

I’ve been wanting to see this show on demand for years.

I thought New Girl would have been a good acquisition for Viceland or ABC comedy, so it’s good to see it land somewhere.

Foxtel did play the final season earlier this year. Just waiting for Bob’s Burgers to show up somewhere as Foxtel seems to have no interest in playing season 9.

I wonder why Ten won’t get Bob’s Burgers back , maybe as they don’t have anything to go with it…

Maybe Seven will buy it?

Maybe SBS on Demand … they have South Park.

Because the ratings don’t justify buying it.

Yeah but if they can buy it for VOD I wouldn’t think that would be a problem.

But why bother?

Bob’s Burgers… I think will either turn up on Disney+ or Netflix hopefully.

How did SBS end up with a show like South Park?, online it says “The stated purpose of SBS is to provide multilingual and multicultural radio and television services that inform, educate and entertain all Australians and, in doing so, reflect Australia’s multicultural society”…

South Park just seems like any other cartoon. It could easily fit well on 7mate .Used to be on 9Go! too I think.

A lot of US shows that don’t seem to fit SBS but end up there …eg Last Man on Earth, Youre The Worst, The Orville, New Girl , Good Fight not complaining, just wondering why we’re seeing so many US shows like this going to SBS on Demand / SBS/Viceland rather than 7, 9 or 10? Those networks don’t want those shows? Stuff like New Girl Ten seemed to air again after CBS bought them out then gave up and You’re The Worst was on One? I think but I remember an article on TV Tonight about networks saying they wanted some US shows and SBS had gotten them instead.

https://tvtonight.com.au/2017/06/why-nine-isnt-very-happy-with-sbs.html and another article from the Sydney Morning Herald from a long time back saying SBS got a kicking, too, for forcing up the price of international content, with Nine’s Hugh Marks revealing that the public broadcaster had outbid his network for The Handmaid’s Tale.

Just thought of this is this the first time the show will air on FTA in HD and also all seasons and also a FTA premiere of the last season which never aired.

Considering SBS Viceland seems to buy Fox stuff, a show like It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia would be a good fit, however I’m wondering if 7 airing it at midnight every year and limited catch up viewing is why it isn’t available anywhere else?

Even if it was older seasons they could get and Seven aired new ones .

The Red Line

Friday 1 November 2019 on SBS On Demand

When an innocent African-American doctor is shot by a white police officer in Chicago, the devastating effects are felt by three vastly different families whose stories of loss and tragedy - and their hopes for the future - intersect in this thrilling drama from Emmy winner Ava DuVernay.

A gripping story told from three different perspectives, each with connections to the case, The Red Line stars Noah Wyle as Daniel Calder, a dedicated high school teacher mourning the loss of his doctor husband. Daniel tries to push through his pain while now serving as a single parent to his adopted daughter, Jira (Aliyah Royale), as fellow teacher Liam helps them both cope with the aftermath. Facing the loss of one of her fathers, Jira’s emotional defences impact her relationship with her other Dad - especially when she contemplates a search for her biological mother against Daniel’s wishes. Her mother, Tia (Emayatzy Corinealdi), contemplates contacting Jira after the shooting, but her desire to reconnect with the daughter she gave up for adoption might conflict with her aspirations for a political career.

Officer Pete Evans (Noel Fisher) is sickened by his grave mistake, confused by how it happened and forced to face the striking possibility that race could have played a role in his tragic error. The stories of the Calder, Young, and Evans families converge as they rebuild their lives.

When Rogerson enters into a deadly partnership with career criminal Arthur ‘Neddy’ Smith (Tony Martin), that gives the violent psychopath free reign to run rampant through the Sydney underworld, and the stage is set for tragedy as guns on both sides start blazing. This award winning drama stars Richard Roxburgh (The Hunting) in one of his most pivotal roles, landing him the Most Outstanding Actor Logie Award in 1996.
