New Girl

image

Tuesday 1 October on SBS On Demand

New Girl is an ensemble comedy that takes a modern look at friendship and romance, as a group of five friends attempt to find their respective places in the world, while begrudgingly accepting the responsibilities of adulthood - with often hilarious results.

After going through a rough breakup, awkward and upbeat Jess (Zooey Deschanel) moves in with three single guys. Intelligent and witty Nick (Jake Johnson) is an underachiever who took the bartender off-ramp on his road to success. Schmidt (Max Greenfield) obsesses over his social standing and looks at Jess as a personal project. Winston (Lamorne Morris) is a competitive former athlete who, after realising he will never become a pro, moves into the loft. Together with Jess’ best friend, Cece (Hannah Simone), they bond to form an unlikely, and dysfunctional, family.

Queen of quirky Zooey Deschanel leads an incredible cast as she navigates through the twists and turns of life. New Girl’s seventh and final season is set three years after season six’s gripping finale.
This is the first time all seven seasons are available together.

New Girl will also start screening from the very beginning on SBS VICELAND, weeknights at 6.00pm from Monday, 7 October.

So Ten no longer has the rights, They tried it again on 10 Peach earlier this year but stopped after a few episodes oddly.

Not sure if the final season has ever aired on free to air. Maybe on Foxtel.

I’ve been wanting to see this show on demand for years.

I thought New Girl would have been a good acquisition for Viceland or ABC comedy, so it’s good to see it land somewhere.

Foxtel did play the final season earlier this year. Just waiting for Bob’s Burgers to show up somewhere as Foxtel seems to have no interest in playing season 9.

I wonder why Ten won’t get Bob’s Burgers back , maybe as they don’t have anything to go with it…

Maybe Seven will buy it?

Maybe SBS on Demand … they have South Park.

Because the ratings don’t justify buying it.

Yeah but if they can buy it for VOD I wouldn’t think that would be a problem.

But why bother?

Bob’s Burgers… I think will either turn up on Disney+ or Netflix hopefully.

How did SBS end up with a show like South Park?, online it says “The stated purpose of SBS is to provide multilingual and multicultural radio and television services that inform, educate and entertain all Australians and, in doing so, reflect Australia’s multicultural society”…

South Park just seems like any other cartoon. It could easily fit well on 7mate .Used to be on 9Go! too I think.

A lot of US shows that don’t seem to fit SBS but end up there …eg Last Man on Earth, Youre The Worst, The Orville, New Girl , Good Fight not complaining, just wondering why we’re seeing so many US shows like this going to SBS on Demand / SBS/Viceland rather than 7, 9 or 10? Those networks don’t want those shows? Stuff like New Girl Ten seemed to air again after CBS bought them out then gave up and You’re The Worst was on One? I think but I remember an article on TV Tonight about networks saying they wanted some US shows and SBS had gotten them instead.

https://tvtonight.com.au/2017/06/why-nine-isnt-very-happy-with-sbs.html and another article from the Sydney Morning Herald from a long time back saying SBS got a kicking, too, for forcing up the price of international content, with Nine’s Hugh Marks revealing that the public broadcaster had outbid his network for The Handmaid’s Tale.

Just thought of this is this the first time the show will air on FTA in HD and also all seasons and also a FTA premiere of the last season which never aired.

Considering SBS Viceland seems to buy Fox stuff, a show like It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia would be a good fit, however I’m wondering if 7 airing it at midnight every year and limited catch up viewing is why it isn’t available anywhere else?

Even if it was older seasons they could get and Seven aired new ones .

The Red Line

Friday 1 November 2019 on SBS On Demand

When an innocent African-American doctor is shot by a white police officer in Chicago, the devastating effects are felt by three vastly different families whose stories of loss and tragedy - and their hopes for the future - intersect in this thrilling drama from Emmy winner Ava DuVernay.

A gripping story told from three different perspectives, each with connections to the case, The Red Line stars Noah Wyle as Daniel Calder, a dedicated high school teacher mourning the loss of his doctor husband. Daniel tries to push through his pain while now serving as a single parent to his adopted daughter, Jira (Aliyah Royale), as fellow teacher Liam helps them both cope with the aftermath. Facing the loss of one of her fathers, Jira’s emotional defences impact her relationship with her other Dad - especially when she contemplates a search for her biological mother against Daniel’s wishes. Her mother, Tia (Emayatzy Corinealdi), contemplates contacting Jira after the shooting, but her desire to reconnect with the daughter she gave up for adoption might conflict with her aspirations for a political career.

Officer Pete Evans (Noel Fisher) is sickened by his grave mistake, confused by how it happened and forced to face the striking possibility that race could have played a role in his tragic error. The stories of the Calder, Young, and Evans families converge as they rebuild their lives.

Celebrated Australian filmmaker Mike Jenkins helms this controversial, true-life tale of police corruption in New South Wales that was banned from airing in the state where the events occurred for six years due to ongoing legal proceedings.

Decorated police officer Roger ‘The Dodger’ Rogerson (Richard Roxburgh) was a shining example of law enforcement at its most commendable - until he made a deal with the devil, that is. When Rogerson enters into a deadly partnership with career criminal Arthur ‘Neddy’ Smith (Tony Martin), that gives the violent psychopath free reign to run rampant through the Sydney underworld, and the stage is set for tragedy as guns on both sides start blazing. This award winning drama stars Richard Roxburgh (The Hunting) in one of his most pivotal roles, landing him the Most Outstanding Actor Logie Award in 1996.

Meanwhile, Diaz is out to get the culprit, prove his innocence, and find out who has set him up, no matter what it takes. Diametrically opposed but determined to uncover the truth, both sides set out on an emotional and physical journey to hell.

SBS and Screen Australia announce Digital Originals projects

SBS and Screen Australia have selected ten short-form projects for development as part of the Digital Originals initiative, aimed at providing tangible opportunities for writers from backgrounds underrepresented in the Australian screen sector.

The teams, which hail from across Australia and shine a light on often untold stories, are being developed as part of a workshop under the mentorship of Australian television director and producer, Anna Dokoza ( Flight Of The Conchords, Lady Dynamite , Special ) and Ryan O’Connell, writer, producer and star of the Emmy-nominated Netflix short-form series, Special. The initiative will continue with a second workshop in February, and up to three projects will be selected for further development, and potentially production for SBS On Demand with Screen Australia funding.

“Exploring themes that resonate with all Australians, including culture, sexuality, disability and grief, we’re excited to see the outcomes of these workshops, and the unique stories that this next generation of Australian talent can bring to audiences.”

The Digital Originals initiative represents an expansion of Screen Australia’s existing Story Development and Online Production funds.
