The Looming Tower

Targeting Bin Laden

Friday 13 September at 8:35pm

Featuring an exclusive interview with former President Barack Obama, this thrilling drama documentary reveals the detail behind the US mission that successfully found and killed Osama Bin Laden in May 2011.

Obama and key players in the US Government including America’s National Security Advisor and the White House Chief Counter Terrorism Advisor discuss the mission in vivid detail, revealing what really happened along the corridors of power in the nerve wracking days and hours leading up to the event. Rigorously researched and based on high level CIA and White House background briefings, Targeting Bin Laden travels from the US Navy SEALS landing in Bin Laden’s home town of Abbottabad, Pakistan to the meeting rooms in Washington and the army bases in Afghanistan, offering the most complete picture of this top secret mission currently available.

Backtrack Boys

Sunday 15 September at 8:35pm

A group of troubled boys are on a perilous course towards jail, until they meet up with the rough talking, free-wheeling jackaroo, Bernie Shakeshaft, and hit the road with his legendary dog jumping team.

This observational documentary, filmed over two years, follows boys in a youth program that Bernie runs from a shed on the outskirts of Armidale, a rural town in Australia. On the road, the boys find their voice, make great friendships, and the dogs become national champions. But as the boys sleep under the stars at night, the trauma is never too far away.

With their survival and futures at stake, they must constantly step up, push themselves, and support each other - and some days can be hard. This inspiring coming of age story reveals the challenges and triumphs these boys face as they try to find their place in the world, and the dogs that help tame their wild ways.

Whiskey Cavalier

From Wednesday 18 September at 10:25pm

FBI agent Will Chase (Scott Foley) and CIA operative Francesca ‘Frankie’ Trowbridge (Lauren Cohan) share custody of an inter agency team of international superspies

Whether it’s defusing a suitcase nuke on the subway, flipping a foreign agent or recovering priceless artefacts, this one of a kind team provides a mashup of visceral espionage action, romance, comedy and intrigue in a globe trotting one hour action dramedy with international flair.

The Twinning Reaction

Friday 20 September at 8:40pm

The Twinning Reaction gives voice to the unwitting subjects of an infamous American scientific experiment the 1960s Neubauer Bernard study of separated twins.

Told from the perspective of the identical twins and triplets who were secretly split up in infancy and studied by psychoanalysis for decades, the documentary examines the traumatic, long term effects of the separations and continuing deception on the twins and their adoptive families. The film tracks one set of twins as they obtain their own twin study data, which facilitates important revelations and new discoveries.

Whiskey Cavalier was produced by Warner Bros and lasted one season on ABC in the US earlier this year. I think this is the first WB series to debut on SBS.

The Name of the Rose

From Thursday 3 October at 8:35pm

Based on Umberto Eco’s 1980 novel, which has sold more than 50 million copies to date, The Name of the Rose is set in Italy in 1327 and follows the Franciscan monk William of Baskerville (John Turturro) and his novice Adso von Melk (Damian Hardung) as they arrive at a secluded monastery in the Alps.

There they become witnesses to a series of mysterious murders. While Baskerville and Melk investigate and search for the killer, they are hunted themselves by the merciless inquisitor Bernard Gui ( Rupert Everett ), who prosecutes those who criticize the pope. The story takes place over a single week during the winter of 1327: seven days and seven nights filled with killings, ghosts, blood, and deep mysteries.

Due to Riviera’s poor ratings, it was pushed back to 9.30pm last night, followed by SBS World News at 11.25pm. A repeat of Secrets of Harrods Department Store was shown at 8.30pm.

Ainsley’s Australian Market Menu

From Thursday 10 October at 7.30pm

Ainsley’s Market Menu sees Ainsley Harriott traversing Australia on a fun-filled food adventure through some of Australia’s most diverse and colourful produce markets.

Armed only with a few pots and pans and a hunger for the best fresh produce, Ainsley has only a few hours to explore the market, find his ingredients and conceive some quick and tasty dishes to win over the crowds.

At each market, Ainsley has booked a stall in a prime position. Arriving at dawn with little more than some cooking equipment, Ainsley sets about creating his unique market menu by the time the locals are ready for lunch!

With little time to waste Ainsley sets out to explore the market, meet the producers and seek out the produce, all the while hatching a plan for his market menu.

Drawing inspiration from the location, its people and its produce, Ainsley will aim to push the boundaries of the local culture with his innovative food creations.

Once he’s scoured the market for the produce, it’s back to his stall where, with curious onlookers standing by, he goes about creating original, gourmet snacks to dish up to the growing crowds.

6-part BBC/HBO mini-series Years and Years premieres on SBS in early November (November 6 IIRC). It was created and written by Russell T. Davies and stars Emma Thompson, and debuted in UK in May this year. It’s one of few BBC/HBO co-productions not to debut on Foxtel.
