Wednesday 26 April 8:30 PM
Brian Cox goes on a personal quest to explore our complicated relationship with money and wealth.
Throughout the program he will tell his own story, from growing up in poverty to becoming a highly paid Hollywood actor, playing one of the richest and most bloodthirsty capitalists on TV. This is his mission to remove his fear of poverty and to untangle the knotty issue of money and happiness.
With his wry humour and intrepid curiosity, Bryan rolls up his sleeves in a soup kitchen in the Bronx, mingles with supermodels on Miami Beach, meets the homeless in Harlem and drops in on a billionaire in London’s most expensive house. His blunt questioning and passionate anger exposes a world in which the richest 1% own half of the world’s wealth and the safety net for the poorest is being swept away on both sides of the Atlantic. The Andes Tragedy: 50 Years Later
Sunday 30 April 8:30 PM
On Friday the 13th of October 1972, a plane carrying a Uruguayan rugby team crashed in a remote area of the Argentinian Andes during the heart of the snowy season. A search was abandoned after only 10 days and all aboard were presumed dead. But of the 45 passengers and crew, 32 had survived the initial impact.
For 72 unimaginable days and nights they endured starvation, sub-zero temperatures, and even an avalanche. The bodies of the dead became the survivors’ only source of food. And all attempts at saving themselves proved hopeless. Then, just before Christmas, the world was stunned when two emaciated men emerged from the mountains, having travelled on foot for 10 days and leaving 14 more survivors back at the crash site.
The unthinkable ordeal of the Andes survivors is one of the greatest examples of human endurance in recorded history. Now, on its 50th anniversary, an expedition that includes one of the survivors returns to the remote crash site in summer, where glacial melting and the effects of climate change have stripped the area of snow and ice. With this dramatic transformation, the site has begun revealing long-hidden secrets. From buried wreckage to personal items, to preserved human remains, the means by which 16 men survived the impossible have never been more clearly revealed. Featuring exclusive interviews with survivors and climate experts, this is a totally new and unique telling of the greatest survival epic of all time.

And it is a competition for individual successes and records. The breath-taking two-part documentation traces the historical development in the race for supremacy in the sky and shows the immense challenges facing modern aviation today.
(This program was originally scheduled for February broadcast).
Supertunnels
Friday 5 May 7:30 PM
To overcome oceans and mountains which separate us from our neighbours, engineers have dug tunnels once thought impossible. We visit the sites of three vast tunnel projects.
In 1871, Mont-Cenis built the first tunnel through the Alps. Work was supposed to take up to 30 years, but the new pneumatic drill broke all the records. On its opening in 1994, the Euro tunnel was the world’s longest under-sea tunnel. Last, but not least, the 1965 Mont Blanc Tunnel, the longest road tunnel of its time.

The battle for heaven starts on Earth
New SBS documentary The Kingdom premieres Thursday 8 June on SBS On Demand and airs 7.30pm Sunday 11 June on SBS
Walkley award-winning journalist Marc Fennell returns to the world of Pentecostal religion after running away 17 years ago. In a deeply personal documentary, Marc investigates how Australia produced one of the world’s most successful and scandal plagued megachurches Hillsong…and asks if this kingdom is crumbling then who will take its place?
Premiering Thursday 8 June on SBS on Demand and 7.30pm Sunday 11 June on SBS, feature-length documentary, The Kingdom, sees Walkley award-winning journalist Marc Fennell (Framed, Stuff the British Stole, Mastermind) step back into the Pentecostal world he ran away from 17 years ago, to uncover the seismic shift driving Hillsong’s decline, and to confront his own raw and complex childhood within the church.
Marc meets current and fellow former believers who expose the human cost of the Pentecostal juggernaut and explores how allegations of bullying, sexual assault and financial mismanagement have eroded Hillsong’s once mighty empire.
He confronts his own past spent in these churches, where he witnessed adults speaking in tongues, falling to the ground, and demons being thrown out of people. He explains why he escaped and why he’s remained largely silent about it until now.
Presenter and Producer Marc Fennell said, “The moment the rest of the world knows that you have this in your past, they don’t pay attention to whether you liked it, hated it or if you left. You get tarred with it. Many people have had their lives positively transformed by Pentecostalism. But there are also volunteers, staff, victims, and others who have been completely chewed up and spat out by modern megachurches."
Spanning a wild journey around Australia and into the USA, The Kingdom takes cameras inside the up and coming Pentecostal megachurches making the bold move into Hillsong’s home turf and asks: is this the competition for souls it seems to be and can they succeed where Hillsong has failed its followers?
The Kingdom will be subtitled in two languages, streaming on SBS On Demand in Simplified Chinese and Arabic.
