Lies, Politics And Democracy

Tuesday 3 January 8:30 PM

In September 2022, ahead of the 2022 midterm elections and amid continuing false claims that the 2020 election was stolen from former President Donald Trump, Frontline presents Lies, Politics and Democracy.

From veteran Frontline filmmaker Michael Kirk and his award-winning team, Lies, Politics And Democracy is an examination of the profound and mounting threats to American democracy, as it tracks major political decisions made in the United States over the past seven years, and lays bare the deep fissures that resulted.

The documentary presents startling new details from GOP insiders on how the indulgence of Trump’s authoritarian impulses and embrace of his rhetoric enabled his power over the American political system, leading the nation to this precarious moment.

Told in part through the perspectives of key Republican players and party leaders, the two-hour special provides first-person accounts from those who sounded.

A disappointing schedule from SBS with so many repeats, just as the other networks are starting new programs for 2023. The first week I can recall for a long time that has no premiere series or documentary or special program.

Also notable that War Of The Worlds series 3 has been pushed to a late night timeslot form 5 January. Unusual for SBS to move a premium first run series to such a late slot; must have been disappointed with the ratings.

Promo shown during this week says the episode will feature actress Jean Smart.
Then I realise that SBS has bought the rights to the American version of Who Do You Think You Are? (the Jean Smart episode was the finale of season 9 in 2018). It was shown intermittently on Nine during weekend afternoons.

Scotland: A Wild Year

From Friday 27 January 7:35 PM

These are the extraordinary stories of Scotland’s secret wild places and the unexpected animals that live there.

This four-part series reveals a spectacular array of wildlife - from highland red deer, white-tailed eagles, red squirrels and pine martens to coastal dwelling puffins, grey seals, otters, and even killer whales. Stretching from the Shetlands to the far south of Scotland, each episode focuses on how animals strive to survive through four very different seasons in one epic year, dominated by a maritime climate that’s both punishing and unpredictable, where their lives are always at the mercy of the elements.
