True. We don’t know. But The Project is a hit at 7. And it’s on brand in that timeslot. I just don’t know why anyone would mess with that for the unknown of commercial local news at 7.
There would be something ironic in hearing Jen Keyte say “See you at 7”. Might even work.
Yes I think that was a condition of the joint-venture between TEN and CBS for ELEVEN. News revolution was all TEN.
Here’s where the news revolution idea started from. Still can’t believe they went through with it 18 months later.
No chance CBS had something to do with it back then? I’m just putting it out there because its funny how all this chatter has happened against since CBS took over. And I agree with you I don’t think they should revisit it.
Not sure that flat out mimicking 7 and 9 is the way to go. When they engage in a 3 way battle it’s usually the last one in that exits.
Why does everyone here want Ten to go head to head with Seven/Nine? They’ve burnt the place once before so why do it again? They would be mad let their already mediocre audience be eroded even further (unless CBS/Ten can think of something so groundbreaking that Seven and Nine will be quivering in their boots).
Ten should be the point of difference. More often than not their difference pays off.
That’s usually how Ten has broken away from the pack in the past even back to the days of Number 96, Blankety Blanks and Prisoner and more recently Big Brother and MasterChef. Not by copying what 7 and 9 are doing
With CBS being the #1 network in the US, I would’ve thought they would just replicate whatever the schedule is there. Obviously audiences are different etc but Ten isn’t too far off from what CBS currently have:
4.30pm Judge Judy
5pm CBS 2 News (Ten News at 5pm)
6pm CBS News at 6 (Ten News at 6pm)
6.30pm CBS Evening News (Ten Evening News)
7pm Inside Edition (The Project)
Pointless might be a once a week grand event style format.
It obviously clashes with the same program 7 and 9 offer but it could also be seen that 7 and 9 aren’t as strong as they once were in News (and the way it is presented) that it is opportunistic for Ten to come in . .
Anyway, who knows really!
The more I think about it, I think that the best solution and compromise here is:
5:00pm Ten News First at 5
5:30pm Pointless
6:30pm Ten News Evening Edition
7:00pm The Project
The above keeps the status quo with news first at 5 being their point of difference, should deliver a good audience to the new Pointless which no doubt will be an hour long format and should keep (ideally build) viewer retention across the whole hour out of the news and then delivers a hyper local news bulletin at 6:30 (when people are getting home) before a short and sharp shortened The Project with more panel discussion and interviews with long form stories moving to a new weekly Current Affairs show to be announced. Other benefits include a short news bulletin at 6:30 (will need a point of difference presentation wise, also better promotion and story selection than the rivals as well as a commitment from the network to build the timeslot) which differentiates from the hour long one over on the other commercials. It also keeps their shows from directly going head to head with the other commercial offerings in the same timeslots, noting of course that 7 & 9 do code their news audiences separately across the hour.
People watch afternoon programming - especially 6pm - basically in terms of hours. Starting an 60-minute game show at 5:30 is madness. And starting a local news at 6:30 - when Seven and Nine News have already exposed viewers to their best work of the day in that first half hour - is madness.
I think a smart and fast National News at 5pm
5pm Ten National News (with some big name hosts)
5.30pm Pointless
6pm Ten Local News
7pm Project
7.30pm reality etc
Watch Ten lose most of its audience if they go national at 5.
The two best line-ups are:
4:30 Bold and Beautiful
5:00 Ten News
6:00 Ten News
6:30 The Project
or
3:30 Bold and Beautiful
4:00 Pointless
5:00 Ten News
6:00 Ten News
7:00 The Project
Another option could be…
4.00 Neighbours
4.30 Bold and Beautiful
5.00 TEN NEWS - Melbourne Update (10 mins)
5.10 Pointless
6.00 TEN NEWS - Melbourne Bulletin (30 Mins)
6.30 The Project
7.30 Reality Based Format
8.30 Entertainment/Drama Based Format
9.30 TEN NEWS - Melbourne Bulletin (30 Mins)
10.00 CBS Based Programming.
This is not bad. But, in your sked there, Ten are still giving up a tried and tested success - News at Five until 6 - for a maybe-maybe not-who knows how long it will last show.
why does the news have to be a one hour bulletin?
The more I think about it, the more I like a local 7pm flagship bulletin.

Get your tongue around that!
Imagine if she was at 7 news.

Wouldn’t a half hour edition create less discussion and time for interviews?
The other reason to put Pointless at 4 is similar to the idea of “First at Five” in the first place - it gets the jump on the opposition. Like Ten News grabs the news audience before they watch the 6pm news, Pointless could grab the game show audience before they watch the 5pm game shows.
30 minute news is a point of difference
