The Coronation day drew large audiences across the FTA networks. Seven won the night on network shares that included AFL on the main channel in Melbourne while ABC ranked second including a 8.1% share for ABC News. Nine was third including NRL on the main channel in Sydney and Brisbane with Nine’s main channel ranking second for the night. 10 was perhaps a surprise with its best share of the week since Sunday night and the network’s best Saturday share since 2021. SBS was uncompetitive with a main channel share below 2%,one of its worst result ever recorded.

Seven News was the number one program of the night with its highest rating Saturday bulletin of the year. ABC and Nine news results were down slightly on their usual results.

The result of the top 20 featured various codings for the coronation coverage. Breakfast TV was notably absent from the results.

Seven and 10 had minimal coding. ABC decided to break up the coverage into at least five segments. For Seven the two coding are obvious – before and after the 6pm news. Nine’s four entries are less obvious.

After consolidating the ABC and ABC News numbers we have:

Seven’s Coronation coverage did pretty well in Melbourne with 84,000 watching it on 7two in SD. Conversely, we won’t find out how many Melbourne viewers watched the AFL on main channel until this afternoon when Total TV figures come out.

Very good numbers for the King’s Coronation across ABC, Seven, Nine and 10.

Good numbers for the coronation but on Foxtel, footy was preferred. My Rabbitohs with a big win last night

Is this the first time 10’s main channel cracking double digits in years?

Good to see 10 actually doing well (by Saturday standards anyway) with coverage of the coronation. If only they could put a bit more effort into programming on Fridays and Saturdays all the time.

Pretty impressive with the ratings for the Coronation - making 17 entries in the top 20 (the News making the other 3 spots). The ABC won the Coronation coverage, with Seven a close second.

In the past, 10’s various “royal coverage” wouldn’t rate. So i am happy with their numbers this time around. When was the last time they had a share of 10+% on a Saturday night?

Good to see Seven and 10 having very few “coding” for the ratings, while the ABC and Nine and plenty of entries.

SBS: 1.7%.

Thanks Captain Obvious.

I will be glad when programming returns to normal tonight because I’m totally over the Coronation

Seems you aren’t the only one.

23/24 million Australians and roughly 2 million watched the Coronation. I think Albo has his answer in regards to a Republic Referendum.

I think you’re right lol

While I can see where you are coming from we should be more accurate with the numbers.

My estimate of 2.26 million is the average rating for the ceremony in the 5 capital city markets, not counting BVOD.

Later today we can see the national numbers. But as usual, the ratings are an average across the broadcast.

Lol Sorry, yeah it was just a rough guesstimate. My point is the majority of the country didn’t watch I guess.

To be honest, when was the last time the majority of the country watched the same thing on television?

Still some life in Ten but as usual a distant 4th well behind Seven, Nine and ABC

Seven deserved the win.

Majority of the country doesn’t watch these events MOST of the time. One of the highest events - Hewitt in the Aus Open Finale Rated around 4 million metro from memory.

I think a total average figure metro over 2 million is incredible given the rhetoric around lower interest.

In particular, aside from an afternoon coding, interesting that Seven has one prime time entry. They must have had some very high peaks to come out with an average that still is higher than all competitors.

I can see David’s point because there is saturation programming across all stations

There was an opportunity for one network to counter

I really don’t get how Nine’s strategy of shifting the Coronation in NSW/QLD to a multichannel failed, yet Seven’s same strategy in VIC worked (viz-a-viz viewers)

ABC running the same coverage on ABC & the news channel is such a waste - use the news channel to do something slightly different (say coverage with/without commentary or something with Auslan)

It’s not that simple though - many thought the 1999 referendum would be a slam dunk and it got mired in discussions about what model to adopt. Not to mention that you can be either for or against a monarchy and not be particularly interested in the ceremony of crowning a new monarch.

Judging the potential success of a significant change like becoming a republic would be on the basis of the number of people (or not watching) something on telly is a little bit simplistic
