Even in 1980, Nine were still using ‘Living Color’ in their program closers.
There’s been some discussion recently about industrial action at the ABC. Here is another example from 1986 that also impacted SBS due to a proposed merger of the two.
There was some discussion a few years ago
Yes, not sure what you name that message, but it’s like a tag line.
I think 9 had a similar tag line on Blankety Blanks for the word “Stereovision” in 1985, with two sets of 9 balls.
Aren’t they still trying to do this now? What would of been gained back then it would become one channel? Just money, I suppose?
In 2025, we would be losing services now that there’s all the multichannels and everything.
Stereo television came to the Nine Network in 1984 and coincident with that, Nine launched “Stereovision” (see below for the logo).

I like that logo.

Yes, that’s the one. It kind of looks like two sets of left and right speakers.
I think that was the point. WIN-4 had a similar ident where there were two WIN logos spitting out the words Stereo Television before merging together. BtV-6 and GMV-6 just added Stereo Television to the bottom and also had a static slide saying 6 Stereo Television.
Correct me if Im wrong.

i guess i was surprised that none of the other networks put a lot into promoting stereo like Nine did, they sort of just did it with not a lot of fanfare. Ten in Melbourne might have included a “Stereo” caption in their PRGs if a program was in stereo, but I don’t recall either Seven or Ten doing any major promotion of it. And certainly not from ABC or SBS. Though maybe someone might correct me
Given the timing of the launch of SBS-TV, I’d assume that SBS would have launched in stereo? Or have I got my dates wrong?
Not in 1980
Did Australia ever try to do anything like SAP, like they have in the States? Playing different audio tracks in other languages?
They do have them to stream on SBS on Demand but not sure if they ever broadcast them on SBS.
TasTV had a bumper sticker campaign to promote stereovision similar to Nine’s. I’ve seen a few getting around on old Caronas and Geminis.
SBS didn’t go to stereo until around 1991, while ABC TV went stereo on some of its stations in 1992.
While Nine seemed to roll out stereo sound across the network, that didn’t seem to be the case for Seven and 0/10 where it was staggered. IIRC early on Brisbane used to lose stereo during DST on at least TVO - it was stereo for live feeds but not programs on one hour delay.
Southern Cross TV8 didn’t even bother with Stereo TV until after aggregation IIRC.
