Random TV History

Nowadays it would… but back then there weren’t many religious branded radio stations then to create that impression (like Faith, Hope, Heart etc).

Yeah I agree… Toowoomba was a bit of a bible belt back then… but even the logo looks Christian - with the dove and clouds… and pre LGBTQIA+ flag days when the Christians still laid claim to the rainbow.

NBN TV and Kloster Ford.

Is that even a Ford? Looks more like a Holden Torana

And, during the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, Nine and 10 happened to put a small percentage of respective Australian Programming on Hiatus.

On 10, Programs like Neighbours, Cheez TV and The Pepsi Chart (There was an episode on Youtube from Day Three, not sure if it’s still up?) did continue to run over the course of the 16 days with Good News Week, GMA and Meet the Press were the only ones rested whereas Nine did continue to show the likes of Burkes Backyard, Sale of the Century, Our House and Getaway (Mind You, Day Thirteen of the games saw an episode dedicated to Australian Locations), while Australia’s Funniest Home Videos and Burgo’s Catchphrase were only rested.

i would love to see a Burkes Backyard style program return to the commercial channels in prime time - Gardening Australia just doesn’t cut the mustard

The problem is that it’ll be chockablock with paid product placement. Usually for products that might not be the best for what you need.

a lunchtime program perhaps?

Same problem. They’ll stuff it full with product placement.

What works for gardens in one part of Australia won’t work in others. Any product placement needs to take that into account.

Cruise around any capital city in Australia at the moment and you’ll hear radio stations right across the dial thrashing Ava Max’s new song Forever Young.

Back in 2019, in the early days of her career, she performed on Sunrise. Which many visiting artists used to do back in the day.

But the opportunities for overseas performers to showcase their singing talents on Australian TV are limited these days.

Previously there was a range of shows where live performances were common place. From Enya singing 100 voices at the same time on Hey hey! To old rockers like Gary Puckett performing Young Girl on the Midday show.

But few of them beat this performance. Live. Raw. Vibrant. Well produced. Nice work Sunrise.

There isnt the money in TV anymore especially in Australia. I would have loved for Ten to have developed the what was the midday news into a 90 minute edition and recreate an 11am style format for the first hour and then in the last half hour presenting it like a proper news bulletin. I think the format may have attracted viewers with a no infomercial format. Alas we will never know if it would have worked as they didnt do this and with Seven planning a 1 hour long news at midday themselves, even if they tried it now, it would be a little too late

There’s a reason laws are not ex post facto.

Any legal action would have the relevant law of 1984 applied

The Script are another band that regularly performed on Australian TV while they’ve been in the country, an example being when they performed on Sunrise in 2008 around the time their debut single “We Cry” was on regular rotation on radio at the time:

They visited the country for eight consecutive years between 2008-15; apart from their touring duties they would also perform on Sunrise and The X Factor among other shows; they also performed at the 2009 and 2012 NRL Grand Finals as well.

Still on the subject of The Script, they’ll be in the country later this month for a few festivals, as well as headline shows in Wollongong and Sydney.

Often on talk shows hosts would get their guests to ‘randomly’ get up and sing (Parky used to do this a lot). I was always skeptical how ‘unscripted’ these performances actually were.

Here’s a piece of random TV history, where k.d. lang looks genuinely unprepared when Derryn Hinch gets her to sing.

And she nails it.
