Still on the subject of touring artists, Sam Fischer also dropped into Sunrise in September 2022 just before commencing local touring duties with British singer Mimi Webb.

IIRC, he had been based in LA throughout the worst period of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Is Sunrise the only show that touring artists go on? Ever see anything on Today? News Breakfast?

Though she technically wasn’t on tour, Ava Max also appeared on the Today show in November last year when she was in the country to perform at the ARIA Awards.

She also appeared on Sunrise early in 2023 when she was here to perform at World Pride.

Seems to be - probably a benefit of them being in the CBD for many years, though now it takes about the same amount of time to travel to either Seven or Nine’s studios, and there seems to be less on Sunrise these days (at least from what I see).

News Breakfast has the odd interview, and the occasional touring act (though usually an Australian one)

Sometimes when I was in the city in the morning I’d even watch the performances from outside if I had time.

I was lucky enough to see the likes of Ava Max, Human Nature, the Pussycat Dolls, Hanson and Craig David among others perform on the show in this manner.

Lots of performances on Tonight Live. But were there many by touring artists?

Needless to say Vizard had a lot of Melbourne acts, and sometimes they were really, really good. Like these fellas. I like this song because it also reminds me of when Channel 7’s Talking Footy was on Monday nights.

From Nine’s Wide World of Sports openers in 2006 - there were two different variations, with the NRL and AFL bits swapped around (NRL telecasts would show that one last, and vice versa):

The footage of Barry Hall is from the Network Ten telecast of the Brisbane Lions vs Sydney Swans match from 2005 in which Hall kicked the match winning goal after the final siren (also note Brad McEwan on the boundary line):

No idea where the Nick Riewoldt footage came from though I think it must’ve come from any one of St Kilda’s home matches against the Adelaide Crows (Nine), Sydney Swans or Brisbane Lions (Ten) in the 2005 season.

Nice work.

The Jim Nantz ‘a win for the ages’ gives it a good feel as well.

Yes. You’ve got me bamboozled. I’ve checked. And this footage is hard to find. Docklands. Herald Sun. St Kilda runner. Not a lot to go on. The Dennis Cometti ‘cometh the man’ is unrelated.

Come to think of it.

If Nine brought back a similar opener from that 2006-08 period to replace its (outdated, IMO) current WWOS opener, they could use footage from, for example, Nathan Cleary’s winning try in the 2023 NRL Grand Final, Ash Barty’s 2022 Australian Open win, the Melbourne Cup and/or the Summer Olympics now that their sports smorgasbord is huge.

Just in light of the discussions in the sign offs and sign ons thread. Being a shift worker and having all the entertainment options we now have at our disposal. It made me wonder if what if i was working the hours i am now back in the late 70s into the 80s.

Being in a city that only had 2 channel unless you were lucky enough to have a large rooftop antenna. I suspect i probably would have been one of the first in my circle to get a Video. But also tapes were expensive back then too.

Makes for an interesting what if for me. I finish work at midnight and get home about half past and can’t go straight to sleep.

Probably radio/music… or read?

If you were along the South Coast of NSW, WIN4 in the 1980s acknowledged the significant number of shift workers in its region and accommodated this with running late night re-runs of prime time shows through to about 2.30am. IIRC they also stayed on-air overnight on Friday nights with movies etc.

Elsewhere, and even in some capital cities, TV options after midnight were limited. Newspapers and radio would probably have been your friend after work!!

I remember my first gig in radio in the early 90s, 7-midnight and I’d finish work and I’d be buzzing, but it was all a bit like that Meatloaf song…

All revved up and no place to go

There was no TV so you had to go and make your own fun. I’d pop into the pie cart and there was a late night fish n chip shop open too, always talk to the cabbies. You got to know the cops too. You probably get this feeling as well as a shift worker… like if you pop into a servo regularly at that time, become a bit of a late night regular… it’s sort of like a bit of a club… there’s a little group of us who are awake while most of the world are catching zeds.

well this is about as random as i can imagine…

The 1981 soap Holiday Island, a monumental flop here at home, seemingly still managed to get a run overseas. This appears to be from Dutch television:

Didnt WIN air this series instead of Infomercials whilst still a Nine affiliate prior to the 2016 affiliation swap

OK, I think I’ve figured it out - it must be from the St Kilda vs Geelong Cats game from round 19, 2005 - as Nick Riewoldt can be seen wearing a black armband in the match, as well as in that 2006 WWOS opener. I’ve checked footage from the Crows, Swans and Lions games that season and Riewoldt isn’t wearing a black armband in either of those matches.

Several series were aired instead of Nine’s Home Shopping snoozefest in the 3am weekday timeslot - all from the Crawfords library.

Didn’t Hey Hey It’s Saturday use the Holiday Island theme for some of their segments on occasion?
