I thought its play on 10 News First and a breakfast show’s ‘First Edition’ is quite cool. Harks back to the ‘Second Edition’ news in the 90s too.
Quite a few of the members didn’t want to have them in this thread, so the mods decided to create a new thread, which the mods set to lock after IIRC about 20 days - no one posted in it, so it got locked.
So glad we’ve lost rainforests for this.
Yeah, god I hate this stuff.
Something completely different from me…
Taking Nexstar’s new Fox local news template (on WDAF Kansas and WXIN Indianapolis) to KTVI St. Louis. I thought they’d take it when they rebranded the newscasts on KPLR, but they didn’t, so here’s my take.
Always thought the WPIX-inspired ticker was too large and competed against the main supers for viewer’s attention, so I trimmed it down a bit. Even mocked up their newsdesk screens based on the ones used in WXIN…
Returning to this 2-year-old idea: If World Service News was trialed 5 years before the channel’s launch with a different look, the BBC may be trying out this ‘News 24’ around '93?
Considering the launch branding for WSTV was basically a retirement home for the BBC1 COW, the test ‘News 24’ would probably be the same for Lambie-Nairn’s 1988 titles, with a modified aerial symbol to incorporate the numeral. Come to think of it, the tilted oval might also be a forerunner to the actual ‘red and cream’ package!
It can also be a part of my bigger rabbit hole: What if British Satellite Broadcasting wasn’t taken over by Sky, but by a consortium of Thames and BBC (and UK Gold would be a part of the resulting ‘UK Network’ later)? I’d imagine the branding for the BSB channels would be kept at first, but incorporating a new name, based on UK Gold’s logo, as the masterbrand.
I did The Sports Channel one in 2022 to sketch out the idea. As for Now, I’d imagine its programming to shift to more news; particularly airing World Service News instead of BBC’s domestic bulletins due to license fee concerns. I changed the tagline to better reflect the increasing live news reporting on the channel. The BBC would then took over Now in 1995 and relaunched it as News 24.
Weird ideas, but hey!
Would have been a better situation for BSB if that happened - they deserved better than a merger with Sky with an almost immediate loss of identity.
the BSB visual identity I have always have had a soft spot for.
Good stuff as always!
What if Rediffusion survived the 1968 franchise round and went to colour. The first continuity clock was a very restrained affair
As was the first ident
Rediffusion had a good relationship with ABC even having a polite handover at 7 PM comprising first with a menu…
Then with a cheerful goodbye:
In the early 1970’s LWT and Anglia held tentative talks about a merger but the IBA prevented it but what could have happened if that merger had gone ahead?
The company called Network South East started operating in 1974 and at first had a small on screen identity. Here’s the Anglia endcap:
LWT’s endcap was very similar:
The first unified ident was in 1979. This was from a programme called “Town and Gown” which looked at life in university cities. Only one edition was transmitted before the strike:
