Radio Stations - Music Logs

I thought I’d take a look at how 2CA is sounding these days, and how it compares with 6iX.

1053 2CA - Canberra, ACT
"Forever Classic"
Monday 19th July 2021 - 10-11am AEST

“Hit & Run” Jo Jo Zep & The Falcons
“Wired For Sound” Cliff Richard
“The Long & Winding Road” The Beatles
“If I Could Turn Back Time” Cher
“Rockin’ All Over The World” Status Quo
“Stop” Sam Brown
“It’s All Over Now” The Rolling Stones
“Breakfast In America” Supertramp
“Love Changes Everything” Climie Fisher
“Khe Sanh” Cold Chisel
“Inivisible Touch” Genesis
“You Wear It Well” Rod Stewart
“I Got You Babe” UB40 feat. Chrissie Hynde

6iX - Perth, WA
"Forever Classic"
Monday 19th July 2021 - 10-11am AWST

“Heroes” David Bowie
“Where Did Our Love Go” Diana Ross & The Supremes
“If I Can’t Have You” Yvonne Elliman
“Break My Stride” Matthew Wilder
“Jet” Paul McCartney & Wings
“The Boys of Summer” Don Henley
“Most People I Know (Think That I’m Crazy)” Billy Thorpe & The Aztecs
“Harley & Rose” The Black Sorrows
“Yesterday Once More” The Carpenters
“These Boots Are Made For Walkin’” Nancy Sinatra
“Maneater” Hall & Oates
“Rock The Boat” The Hues Corporation

It’s worth noting that 2CA have been playing more 80s over the past few months, with 60s being reduced to just 1 an hour. By comparison, 6iX, being in a bigger market with more commercial music stations to choose from, plays a bit more 60s & 70s than 2CA.

I always thought they share the same playlist. 2CA seems a lot more safer these days.

Both 2CA & 6iX were sharing the same playlist for a while a couple years back, but has since gone back to having their own playlists.

I agree. 2GN/XLFM/3GG is more adventurous by comparison.

At least they still have specialty shows like 70s Sunday Nights and 60s Sunday and “Moonlight Lounge”. It has more life that 2UE but 2ue are probably more adventurous in their standard log.

I like the 92.9 Triple M Perth playlist, some good songs in there.

Perth is probably the best playlist out of them. Tend to skew slightly newer due to 96fm. Melbourne and Sydney have definitely gone a bit softer this week with artists like Jewel and Tracy Chapman coming back in. Not sure if it’s part of a move to reintegrate the music format with the regionals

The Jewel and Tracy Chapman songs were probably part of “the randomizer” where they play a song at random from the computer of songs that haven’t been heard on Triple M for a while or not at all. It is a good idea, enjoyed hearing some of the songs on the randomizer.

It’s a good idea but why the need to label it with ‘randomizer’. Just put some surprising songs in the playlist to delight the listener and no need to call it out as special. It spoils it for me.

Just wish stations would play full on variety and stop playing the flogged stuff that we hear day after day. 70’s to now! How good would a station be like that?

Yeah, but sadly it would never happen due to ratings and advertising with commercial stations and all that hence why they play the same songs over and over again.

Give BBC R2 a try. It’s basically 70s to now although leaning younger these days. It does play everything from ABBA, 70s classics to a select bunch of latest hits. Specialist shows on the 90s as well. And no ads. Can get a tiny bit random at times but that grows on you.

I would also recommend Wayne Mac’s Retro Stream:

Each day features a different era of music (60s, 70s, 80s and 90s-2010s). Plenty of ‘wow’ tracks in there. Best of all it is Australian, so it’s ‘our’ retro hits. It reminds me of the former online station 2PR FM, formerly run by one of our members.

I’ve often thought the same thing. But it never happened, so I created my own ‘station’.

It’s basically a playlist of ~2000 tracks, mostly ripped from CDs. They range from '50s songs by Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry et al., through to the best hits and rarities from the '60s, '70s and '80s. Everything from 10cc to ZZ Top is included. I’ve also added some new tracks with a ‘retro’ sound, from artists like Japanese Breakfast and Weyes Blood.

I then copied these files onto several USB sticks, to play them in the car and through my stereo. As far as I’m concerned, it’s a fantastic listen!

Of course, you could do the same thing with a Spotify playlist too, but I’m a bit old school.

Didn’t he write a book on the history of radio?

Yeah, I’ve done that- search for Sumo FM on Spotify.

Wayne Mac’s book is called ‘Don’t Touch That Dial: Hits N Memories Of Australian Radio’. It’s out of print as far as I know, but I have a copy.

Have BBC R2 a run today. Putting it out there, what would Australia’s best “variety station” be?

I don’t think we have any. At least not commercial or ABC. Probably some community stations would be as close as we have.

Servers for lava.net.au have been down in the past few days. It was working at times previously but went down around 4pm yesterday.

At least that’s a lot more songs than any metro commercial network station’s music playlist!
